Chapter 3 - The Arrest of Vanessa Reed

While Daniel was being escorted down the porch steps in handcuffs, Vanessa Reed stood by the unmarked police sedan, her hands already secured in steel cuffs behind her back.

The confidence that had defined her for years—the polished, country-club elegance that she had used to look down on me whenever we met at local events—had completely shattered.

"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed at the arresting officer. "My father is the senior partner at Reed & Associates! He knows the district attorney! This is a civil matter! Claire gave him that money!"

I walked down the steps of the porch, my military cap aligned perfectly, my eyes fixed on the woman who had spent two years trying to replace me.

"Your father's firm has already been notified, Vanessa," Elena said, walking beside me with her tablet in hand. "In fact, your father's partners have just initiated an emergency audit of your family's trust fund. It seems you’ve been forging his signature on several corporate guarantees to secure your real estate loans."

Vanessa froze. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"You thought I was a quiet, submissive wife who didn't notice when her husband smelled of expensive perfume," I said, standing inches from her. The contrast between us was stark—she in her ruined designer clothes, dripping with sweat and rain, and me in the pristine, decorated uniform of a nation's defender.

"I notice everything, Vanessa," I continued. "I am a logistics officer. My job is to track movements, identify supply lines, and eliminate threats before they reach our perimeter. You and Daniel were not a clever operation. You were a sloppy, arrogant mess of paper trails and digital footprints."

"Claire... please," Vanessa whispered, her voice suddenly losing its venom, replaced by a desperate, pathetic pleading. "I didn't know she was a colonel. I swear, Daniel told me you were just a paper-pusher. He said you didn't care about him. He said you were boring!"

"I am boring when it comes to drama, Vanessa," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "But I am extremely efficient when it comes to justice."

I turned to Detective Miller. "Take her away. I want her processed through the federal facility in New Haven. Let's see how her father's country-club connections handle a federal indictment."

As the police cruiser pulled away from the curb, its tires kicking up gravel, the neighbors who had gathered along the sidewalk stood in stunned silence.

Mrs. Gable, the neighborhood gossip who had once told me at a block party that I "should try to dress more like Vanessa if I wanted to keep Daniel's interest," stared at me with her mouth agape.

I looked at her, offered a polite, crisp nod of my head, and watched as she quickly turned and scurried back inside her house.

General Vance stepped up beside me, looking down the street where the police cars were disappearing. "A clean sweep, Colonel. But the hard part begins now. You have two newborns in the hospital and a major logistical deployment transition in Washington next month."

"I can handle it, General," I said, my hand instinctively rising to touch the small silver locket around my neck, which contained the first sonogram photos of Ethan and Grace. "My troops are waiting, and my children are safe. That’s all the logistics I need."

"Very well," Vance said, returning my salute with absolute precision. "We’ll see you at the Pentagon on Monday, Colonel Bennett. Carry on."
