Chapter 6 - The Battle for the Children

While the criminal case against my parents and sister was airtight, a new battleground emerged three weeks later: Fairfax County Family Court.
Sienna’s deadbeat ex-boyfriend and the father of Leo and Mia—a sleazy, irresponsible fitness instructor named Marcus Drake who hadn't paid a dime of child support in four years—suddenly appeared out of the woodwork.
Backed by an aggressive, tabloid-chasing family lawyer, Marcus Drake filed an emergency motion to revoke my temporary custody and demand full physical custody of the children—along with a demand for five thousand dollars a month in emergency child support from my personal estate.
“He doesn't care about those kids, Clara,” I said to my family lawyer, Elena Sterling (no relation), as we sat in the courthouse hallway before the hearing. “He hasn't seen Leo or Mia since Mia was six months old. He’s doing this because my family’s trial is hit the local news and he thinks he can shake me down for cash.”
“We know,” Elena replied, reviewing our documentation. “But family courts heavily favor biological parents unless we can prove severe unfitness or abandonment. Do you have proof he abandoned them?”
Before I could answer, the hallway doors opened. Marcus Drake strutted in wearing a cheap designer suit, accompanied by his lawyer and—to my absolute disgust—my mother, Evelyn Sterling, who had been released on temporary medical bail wearing an ankle monitor!
Evelyn walked with a fake limp, holding a tissue to her eyes, playing the grieving, persecuted grandmother for the cameras gathered outside.
“Clara!” Evelyn hissed as she passed my bench, her voice dropping into a snake-like whisper. “Marcus is taking those children! You will never have a family! You ruined us, and now you’ll end up alone!”
I didn't answer. I sat tall, my hands resting calmly in my lap.
Ten minutes later, we were inside the judge’s chambers. The Honorable Judge Beatrice Vance (no relation to Julian, purely coincidental) sat behind the elevated wooden bench, reviewing the case files with a sharp, discerning gaze.
“Mr. Drake,” Judge Vance began, looking down at Marcus Drake. “You are petitioning for immediate full custody of Leo and Mia Sterling. According to state records, you currently owe forty-two thousand dollars in back child support and have failed to attend six consecutive court-ordered visitation hearings over the last three years. Is that correct?”
Drake leaned toward his attorney, sweating through his collar. “Your Honor... I was young, I was struggling financially, but now that their mother is... incarcerated, I am ready to step up as a father!”
Drake’s lawyer stepped forward. “Your Honor, Miss Clara Sterling is a high-powered corporate consultant who travels internationally ninety percent of the time. She cannot provide a stable home environment for two young children. Furthermore, she is currently unmarried and living in the apartment of a federal agent—an unstable, dangerous domestic setup!”
Before my attorney could stand up to object, the double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Julian Vance walked in, wearing his full dark service dress uniform, holding a thick leather folder stamped with the official seal of the Department of Justice.
He walked down the center aisle, his heavy boots echoing off the oak walls, and stepped directly up to the prosecution table.
“Your Honor,” Julian announced, bowing his head respectfully to the bench. “May I address the court as a officer of the Federal Government and a co-applicant for custody?”
Drake’s lawyer jumped up. “Objection! This man has no legal standing in this custody hearing!”
“Overruled,” Judge Vance declared sharpely. “Deputy Vance, you may speak.”
Julian opened the leather folder, placing three certified documents before the judge.
“Your Honor,” Julian said, his clear voice filling the courtroom. “First, I submit an official report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation demonstrating that Mr. Marcus Drake’s current legal defense is being funded directly by illicit funds funneled through an offshore account controlled by organized crime figures connected to Sienna Sterling’s gambling ring. He was promised a twenty-thousand-dollar kickback if he successfully gained custody to use the children as leverage against Clara Sterling’s testimony in the federal criminal trial.”
Drake’s face turned completely white. He dropped into his chair as if he had been struck by lightning.
“Second,” Julian continued smoothly, glancing at me with deep affection, “Miss Clara Sterling has formally accepted a senior executive position at Vance Risk Management in Washington D.C., eliminating all international corporate travel. And third... Miss Sterling and I have formally executed a co-guardianship residential agreement, establishing a permanent, fully secured estate in Virginia complete with private tutoring, pediatric medical care, and round-the-clock federal perimeter security.”
Judge Vance reviewed the FBI documents, her face hardening into cold marble as she looked down at Marcus Drake and my mother.
“Mr. Drake,” Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with absolute judicial thunder. “Not only is your petition for custody denied with prejudice, but I am referring your financial records directly to the District Attorney for immediate arrest on fraud and child abandonment charges. Bailiffs, take Mr. Drake into custody.”
“What?!” Drake screamed as two court officers grabbed his arms, slapping handcuffs around his wrists. “No! She set me up!”
Judge Vance turned her gaze to my mother, whose mouth was hanging open in terror.
“Mrs. Sterling,” the judge stated coldly. “Your temporary medical bail is hereby revoked for violating the no-contact protective order regarding your grandchildren. You will await your federal trial in custody.”
“Clara!” Evelyn shrieked as she was dragged away alongside Drake. “CLARA! YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO YOUR MOTHER! CLARA!”
I stood up slowly, looking at my mother as she was pulled through the back doors.
“Goodbye, Evelyn,” I said softly.

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with a sharp, final BANG.
“Full legal and physical custody of Leo and Mia Sterling is hereby awarded permanently to Clara Sterling. Court is adjourned.”
