Chapter 8 - Building a New Foundation

Six months after the trial, the peaceful countryside of Middleburg, Virginia, was glowing with the fiery colors of autumn.

I stood on the wide wrap-around porch of a beautiful historic farmhouse—a estate I had purchased using the proceeds from my penthouse sale and my executive bonuses from my new position as Vice President of Risk Management at Vance Holdings.

In the spacious front yard, six-year-old Leo and four-year-old Mia were laughing hysterically, chasing a energetic golden retriever puppy through piles of fallen orange leaves. Their cheeks were rosy, their eyes bright and clear, completely free from the shadows of their chaotic past.

Inside the open kitchen, Julian was chopping fresh vegetables for dinner, wearing a casual flannel shirt, his dark hair messy, looking entirely at home.

I walked inside, sliding my arms around his waist from behind, resting my cheek against his strong back.

Julian set his knife down, turning around in my arms and pulling me close against his chest. He kissed the top of my head softly.

“You’re quiet today,” Julian smiled gently, looking down at me. “What are you thinking about?”

“I was just watching the kids,” I said, looking out the kitchen window at Leo throwing a red ball for the puppy. “Six months ago, I thought my life was completely destroyed. I thought family was just a sentence you had to serve.”

“And now?”

“Now I know that family isn't about blood,” I said, reaching up to touch his face, tracing the soft line of his jaw. “Family is about who shows up when the lights go out. It’s about who stands between you and the storm.”

Julian’s dark eyes softened with profound tenderness. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My breath caught in my throat.

Julian dropped to one knee right there on the warm hardwood floor of our kitchen, holding open the box to reveal an exquisite, vintage-cut diamond ring that caught the golden afternoon sunlight.

“Clara Sterling,” Julian said, his voice deep, steady, and full of raw, honest devotion. “You are the strongest, most resilient, and most beautiful woman I have ever known. You fought through an ocean of toxicity to protect those children and build a life of honor. I don't ever want to stand between you and the storm—I want to stand beside you for the rest of our lives.”

Tears of pure, overflowing happiness filled my eyes.

“Will you marry me, Clara?”

I dropped to my knees in front of him, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss.

“Yes,” I whispered against his mouth, laughing through my tears. “Yes, absolute yes!”

Outside, Leo and Mia saw us through the window and came bursting through the back door, giggling and cheering as they tackled both of us onto the kitchen floor, the puppy barking joyfully around our feet.
