Chapter 3 - The Financial Web Deconstructed

By the second week following Daniel’s arrest, the news had sent shockwaves through the wealthy enclaves of Fairfield County.
The headline on the front page of the Westport Chronicle read: LOCAL FINANCIAL TYCOON ARRESTED IN SHOCKING ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT.
Claire sat in the conference room of Vance, Sterling & Associates in downtown Stamford. Across the long mahogany table sat Arthur Vance, Daniel’s senior business partner, alongside his legal team. Arthur looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
"Claire," Arthur began, his hands trembling slightly as he held a cup of black coffee. "I don't even know what to say. When Marcus brought the police findings to my desk last night, I was sick to my stomach. Daniel told all of us you were in an inpatient psychiatric facility in Boston. He even provided forged medical letters!"
"Daniel is a master of paperwork, Arthur," Claire said calmly. She adjusted her blazer. She had gained back her healthy weight, her skin was clear, and her eyes burned with absolute determination. "He used those forged documents to convince you to sign over my power of attorney access regarding the firm’s private investment equity, didn't he?"
Arthur flinched. He nodded slowly. "He claimed you needed funds for your treatment. We authorized a transfer of $1.2 million from your trust account into a joint holding account three weeks ago."
"Which he then attempted to move into a private shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under his mother’s maiden name," Claire added, sliding a stack of financial audit reports across the table.
Arthur’s lead attorney, a sharp woman named Rachel Sterling, reviewed the documents rapidly. Her eyes widened. "This isn't just attempted murder. This is systematic grand larceny, mail fraud, and wire fraud."
"And that’s why I’m here, Arthur," Claire said, leaning forward. "I am not looking to destroy Whitmore & Vance. My father helped you seed-fund this firm twenty years ago. I am here to clean it out."
"What do you want, Claire?" Arthur asked softly.
"First, you immediately vote to terminate Daniel Whitmore’s partnership for cause, stripping him of his equity without a buyout," Claire stated coldly. "Second, you cooperate fully with the State Prosecutor’s Office regarding every financial transaction he made over the past three years. Third, you transfer his full share of the firm’s real estate assets directly into my name as restitution."
Arthur didn't hesitate. He looked at his attorney, who gave him a brief, solemn nod.
"Consider it done," Arthur said. "He tried to kill you, Claire. If I have to testify against him myself to ensure he rots in a cell, I will do it."

As Claire walked out of the corporate skyscraper into the crisp autumn air, she felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. Daniel had thought she was weak because of her illness. He had assumed her physical vulnerability translated to mental frailness.
He had completely forgotten who her father was: Richard Sterling, one of the most ruthless forensic accountants the East Coast had ever seen. The blood running through Claire’s veins wasn't weak—it was lethal to anyone who dared cross her.
