Chapter 6 - The Shattered Defense

The prosecution’s parade of witnesses over the next four days was a relentless execution of Daniel’s defense.

First came Dr. Evelyn Reed, who presented Claire’s medical records following her rescue. She testified that had Claire remained without her medications and water for another forty-eight hours, her renal failure would have been irreversible, resulting in fatal cardiac arrest.

"In my professional opinion," Dr. Reed stated clearly under oath, "removing those specific medications from a severe lupus patient in the middle of a flare is the functional equivalent of removing an oxygen mask from a high-altitude diver."

Next took the stand was Marcus Vance, the smart-home architect. He walked the jury through every line of code, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the utility shutoffs were executed manually from a smartphone IP address located in Zurich, Switzerland—specifically registered to Daniel Whitmore’s personal device.

"Was there any possibility of a software glitch?" the DA asked.

"Zero," Marcus testified. "The system recorded four separate manual inputs overriding the house's emergency power generator. Someone had to intentionally disable the fail-safe protocols."

Then came the most destructive witness of all: Daniel’s younger brother, Julian Whitmore.

Julian had been subpoenaed by the state after prosecutors offered him immunity regarding minor financial misdeeds connected to the family trust. Julian took the stand, refusing to look his brother in the eye.

"Julian," DA Marcus Vance asked, "did you have a conversation with your brother while you were in Paris during the second week of the trip?"

"Yes," Julian muttered, his voice barely audible.

"Speak into the microphone, please. What did Daniel say to you?"

Julian took a deep breath. "We were at dinner near the Champs-Élysées. Daniel was drinking wine. He said... he said that by the time we got back to Connecticut, 'the Claire problem' would be solved. He said her heart would give out, the doctors would blame her lupus, and he would collect the four-million-dollar life insurance policy to launch his new investment firm."

Panic erupted in the gallery. Eleanor Whitmore let out a choked cry from the second row before bursting into hysterical tears.

Daniel slammed his hands onto the table, standing up frantically. "You traitor! You lying little parasite! I paid for your apartment!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Higgins slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Mr. Whitmore, sit down and keep quiet or I will have you gagged and bound to that chair!"

Daniel was yanked back into his seat by two court bailiffs. He was panting, his eyes wild, looking like a cornered animal.

Claire sat in the front row, watching him calmly. She didn't feel rage anymore. She felt an overwhelming sense of clarity. The man she had spent five years loving was never real; he was merely a hollow shell driven by avarice, cowardice, and vanity.
