Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Sky

Later that night, long after the gala had ended, our family returned to the lakefront estate.

The children were fast asleep in their cozy bedrooms, tucked safely under soft quilts, dreaming sweet dreams of sunshine and laughter.

Gabriel and I walked out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the quiet, shimmering lake. The night sky was clear, studded with millions of brilliant, burning stars. The cool night breeze rustled gently through the leaves of the oak trees lining the shore.

Gabriel wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder, pulling me close against his warm chest.

"A penny for your thoughts, my love?" Gabriel whispered softly.

I leaned back against him, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against my back—a heart that had given my life peace, truth, and unconditional joy.

I looked up at the vast, infinite sky, then out over the dark water where the moonlight painted a long path of pure silver light.

"I was just thinking," I said, a soft, beautiful smile touching my lips, "about that afternoon at 2:17 PM when I signed that consent form on my stomach."

"And what do you think now?" Gabriel asked gently, kissing the side of my neck.

"I think," I said, turning in his arms to look into his loving eyes, "that the man who left me thought he was leaving me in a graveyard. He didn't know he was planting a garden."

Gabriel smiled—a warm, brilliant, devoted smile—and pulled me into a deep, tender kiss under the open, unbroken sky.

The past was gone. The shadows were burned away.
