Chapter 5 - The Gift of Grace

Three months passed.

The seasonal shift brought crisp autumn air and golden sunlight to the city.

At St. Jude Women’s Pavilion, the day had finally arrived: my three daughters were being officially discharged from the NICU. They had gained healthy weight, their lungs were fully developed, and their vital signs were flawless. Grace weighed six pounds two ounces, Lily weighed five pounds fifteen ounces, and Faith—my resilient little fighter—weighed five pounds eight ounces.

The hospital room was filled with joyous activity. Nurses who had cared for them for ninety days brought flowers, handmade baby blankets, and small silver keepsakes.

Julian arrived at 10:00 AM with a specialized luxury transport van equipped with three rear-facing infant car seats, while my close friend Sarah—a brilliant pediatrician who had agreed to oversee their private care—helped me pack their tiny clothes.

I sat in a comfortable armchair, holding Grace and Lily in my arms, while Faith slept soundly in a bassinet beside me.

My physical recovery had been complete. Through intensive therapy, proper nutrition, and the unwavering support of my family, I looked and felt stronger than I ever had in my entire life. My skin was radiant, my hair shone, and my heart was filled with an overwhelming, indestructible peace.

"All set, Emily," Julian said, walking into the room with a warm smile, holding three tiny pink fleece hats. "The van is staged in the private underground garage. No press, no disruptions."

"Thank you, Julian," I said softly, kissing Grace’s soft forehead.

Just then, Nurse Lauren stepped into the room, holding a small document folder.

"Mrs. Vance," Lauren said gently, using my restored maiden name. "I hate to bring this up on such a happy day, but Mr. Carter’s legal representative is downstairs in the administrative office."

My eyebrows raised slightly. "Mark’s lawyer?"

"Yes," Lauren replied. "Under the terms of the temporary emergency order, his attorney is permitted to submit a formal request for emergency supervised visitation rights before the court hearing next week. He dropped off a personal letter from Mr. Carter."

Julian stepped forward, reaching out to take the letter. "Throw it in the trash, Lauren."

"No," I interjected quietly, setting Grace carefully into her bassinet. "Give it to me, Lauren."

Lauren handed me the sealed white envelope.

I opened it. Inside was a handwritten letter from Mark, written on cheap notebook paper from the county jail where he was currently being held on $250,000 bail following his indictment for corporate fraud:

"Emily,

I know you hate me. I know you will never forgive me for what I did at the hospital. I see my mistake every single second of every day in this terrible place. Madison was a nightmare. She used me and abandoned me the moment I lost everything.

I am begging you, Emily. Please show mercy. Allow me to see my daughters just once. I am their father. I deserve to hold them. I am rotting in here. My firm is gone, my reputation is ruined, and I have no money left for a private lawyer. If you have any love left for the man I used to be, please help me.

Yours always, Mark"

I read the letter slowly, line by line.

There was not a single word asking about my health. Not a single word asking if the babies had suffered complications during their ninety days in the NICU. Not a single word acknowledging the trauma he had inflicted on us.

The entire letter was “I, I, I, me, me, me.”

Even sitting in a jail cell, stripped of his wealth and power, Mark Carter was still the exact same selfish, narcissistic child he had always been. He didn't miss his daughters; he missed the image of being a father. He didn't regret hurting me; he regretted getting caught.

I picked up a black pen from the nightstand.

Across the bottom of his handwritten letter, I wrote three clear words:

REQUEST DENIED. FOREVER.

I handed the letter back to Lauren.

"Please deliver this to his attorney," I said, my voice firm, smooth, and absolute. "And inform him that if Mr. Carter attempts to contact me or my daughters again, we will move to have his bail revoked immediately."

Lauren took the paper, a proud, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "With pleasure, Mrs. Vance."

I turned back to my daughters.

Julian helped me gently lift Grace, Lily, and Faith into their car seats. We pushed the stroller down the private corridor, stepping into the elevator that descended into the sunlit garage below.

As the doors slid open, revealing the bright blue sky outside, I took a deep, beautiful breath.

The chapter of Mark Carter was officially closed. The story of my daughters’ future was just beginning.
