Chapter 8 - The Fall of Landon Pierce

By midnight, the storm outside had cleared, leaving the night quiet and clear.

The house was illuminated by the bright, artificial lights of police forensics vans. The power line outside had been re-connected by utility workers, and the soothing, rhythmic hum of Violet’s monitor had returned to the living room.

Landon sat in the back of a Pierce County Sheriff’s cruiser, handcuffed, his face bruised and swollen, staring blankly out the reinforced glass window as officers processed the crime scene inside.

Julian Sterling stood in the living room alongside Detective Miller—a senior detective with the domestic violence division.

"He cut the main power line at the exterior junction box," Detective Miller explained, tapping his official report. "He brought house keys he failed to surrender under the temporary restraining order. He forcibly entered the premises, made verbal threats, and attempted to seize a medically vulnerable infant."

Julian looked at Detective Miller with absolute, icy authority. "That is felony burglary, felony stalker entry, domestic assault, and child endangerment."

"Plus the violation of a domestic violence protection order," Detective Miller nodded grimly. "He won't be getting bail tonight, Mr. Sterling. The judge on duty has already issued a zero-bond hold based on the severity of the threat."

Julian walked over to where I sat on the sofa, holding Violet while my mother gently rocked Clara and Daisy in the rocking chair.

"Corinne," Julian said softly, sitting on the cushion beside me. "Are you alright?"

I looked down at tiny Violet, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest, her breathing steady and deep.

"I’m not scared anymore, Julian," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and completely untrembling. "For six months, I was waiting for his next move. I was waiting for him to try to manipulate the court, or use his mother, or force his way into our lives. But tonight... he showed everyone exactly who he is."

Julian reached out, placing his hand over mine, his eyes shining with deep admiration. "You were incredible, Corinne. You protected your daughters with unimaginable courage."

"Now," I looked up into Julian's eyes, "finish it."

Julian smiled—a cold, lethal smile. "With pleasure."

Over the next seventy-two hours, the legal hammer fell with absolute, devastating precision.

With the criminal charges of felony burglary, child endangerment, and domestic assault pending against Landon, the family court judge held an emergency hearing. In a fifteen-minute proceeding, Judge Thornton revoked all of Landon’s visitation rights indefinitely, issued a permanent twenty-year protective order covering me and all three daughters, and granted me sole legal and physical custody with zero parental access.

Furthermore, the state financial audit at Vance & Pierce concluded.

Landon was formally indicted by a federal grand jury for wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion involving the offshore shell accounts he had used to hide funds from our marriage.

The man who had stood in a hospital hallway calling my pain a 'hysterical fit' was facing up to twelve years in a federal penitentiary.
