Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing Betrayal

Forty-eight hours later, the contrast between my world and Landon’s could not have been starker.

Inside the NICU, Grace was resting comfortably, her heart beating with a strong, steady rhythm. Amelia had taken her first full bottle of milk, and Sophie’s oxygen requirements had dropped by half.

Meanwhile, at the King County Superior Courthouse in downtown Seattle, Landon Pierce stood in a orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist.

I sat in the front row of the courtroom alongside Adrian Cole. I wore a simple black wool coat, my hair pulled back cleanly, holding a folder containing certified bank statements and medical affidavits.

Beside Landon sat his high-priced corporate defense attorney, Richard Sterling, who looked thoroughly uncomfortable being associated with a case that had dominated local news headlines for two days.

Brielle Vaughn sat three rows behind Landon, accompanied by her own criminal lawyer, looking terrified and pale.

"Your Honor," Richard Sterling began, stepping up to the wooden podium before Judge Sarah Vance. "My client, Mr. Landon Pierce, is a respected senior partner at Pierce & Mercer Asset Management. He has no prior criminal record. He is a father to three critically ill infants currently in the NICU. We request a reasonable bail set at $250,000 so he can return to his family and manage his business duties."

Judge Vance lowered her glasses and looked down at Sterling with profound disdain.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance spoke, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "Your client is facing fourteen federal felony counts involving grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and cross-border money laundering. Furthermore, the prosecution has submitted undeniable evidence that Mr. Pierce attempted to use his child’s emergency heart surgery as leverage to extort financial concessions from his wife."

Adrian Cole stood up smoothly from our table.

"Your Honor," Adrian said, stepping forward. "We have also submitted bank records showing that Mr. Pierce attempted to wire $600,000 from the Whitlock Family Trust to an unverified bank account in Zurich at 2:15 p.m. yesterday—while sitting in federal holding."

The courtroom gasped.

Landon snapped his head toward Sterling, whispering furiously. "I told you to clear those transfers yesterday!"

"Silence in the court!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with a sharp thunderclap.

She fixed her piercing gaze directly on Landon. "Mr. Pierce, you represent a severe flight risk, a ongoing danger to the financial security of your victims, and a complete lack of moral integrity. Bail is denied. You will remain in custody at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac pending trial."

Landon’s face drained of all color. "Your Honor! Please! I have clients! My firm will collapse!"

"Your firm has already placed you on administrative suspension, Mr. Pierce," Agent Vance added from the gallery. "And your partner, Arthur Mercer, is currently cooperating with federal auditors."

As the bailiffs grabbed Landon’s arms to drag him back to the holding cells, his eyes locked onto mine.

"Corinne!" he screamed, his voice echoing frantically. "Tell them to stop! You’re destroying my life! We can fix this! Think of what people will say!"

I stood up slowly, adjusted my coat, and looked him straight in the eyes.

"No, Landon," I said clearly, my voice carrying over his screams. "You destroyed your life. I’m just making sure you can’t destroy ours anymore."
