Chapter 4 - The Clean Sweep

The weeks following Landon’s bail denial moved with breathtaking speed.
With Landon locked in federal detention and Brielle facing co-conspirator indictments, Adrian Cole and I began the methodical process of dismantling Landon’s hold over my life.
First came the house.
The four-bedroom modern colonial home in Tacoma—the house where Landon had packed his designer clothes while I was in labor—had been bought using a mortgage co-signed by the Whitlock trust. Within ten days, Adrian executed a formal foreclosure and trust repossession order.
I didn't want to live there anymore. Every wall was tainted by Landon’s lies and Brielle’s lingering presence.
I put the house on the market. It sold in four days for $1.4 million. Every penny of the equity was deposited into a newly structured, bulletproof trust fund created solely for Amelia, Sophie, and Grace.
Next came Pierce & Mercer Asset Management.
Arthur Mercer, Landon’s senior business partner, called me personally to apologize. He offered a full, unreserved audit of the firm’s books. The investigation revealed that Landon had not only stolen from my family trust, but had also embezzled over $1.8 million from three elderly high-net-worth clients to fund his lavish lifestyle with Brielle.
To avoid a devastating corporate collapse, Arthur Mercer agreed to buy out Landon’s equity share at a liquidated discount, remitting $2.1 million directly to the Whitlock Trust to settle all civil fraud claims.
One morning in late January, while sitting in the hospital cafeteria, Adrian handed me a thick leather binder.
"What is this, Adrian?" I asked, sipping my coffee.
"This," Adrian smiled warmly, "is the final Decree of Absolute Divorce, signed off by the state court judge this morning."
I flipped open the binder.
Legal Custody: 100% sole legal and physical custody of Amelia, Sophie, and Grace Whitlock granted to Corinne Whitlock.
Parental Rights: Landon Pierce’s visitation rights suspended indefinitely pending criminal sentencing, requiring mandatory psychological evaluation and full financial restitution before any future petition.
Name Change: Restored my full maiden name, Corinne Whitlock, and legally changed the girls' last names to Whitlock.
Property Settlement: Zero assets awarded to Landon Pierce.
I looked up at Adrian, feeling a tear fall down my cheek. "It's completely over?"
"He has nothing left, Corinne," Adrian said gently. "No money, no house, no firm, and no rights to those three precious girls. You won."

I looked out the window at the rain falling over Tacoma, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace.
"We didn't just win, Adrian," I whispered. "We survived."
