Chapter 3 - The Motel and the Trap

The room at the SunSet Inn smelled of stale tobacco, cheap disinfectant, and damp carpet.

Jason sat on the edge of a stained queen-sized mattress, his head buried in his hands. On the plastic table beside him, four different credit cards lay scattered—every single one of them declined when he tried to pay for the room.

Across the room, Linda was pacing back and forth, her expensive silk blouse rumpled, her designer hair ruined. She was screaming into her phone.

"What do you mean you can't take my case, Richard?!" Linda yelled, her voice echoing off the thin drywall. "We've paid you over two hundred thousand dollars in legal fees over the last three years! You get us an injunction right now! Get that bitch out of my son’s penthouse!"

There was a long pause on the line before Richard Sterling’s panicked voice came through the speaker.

"Linda, listen to me very carefully," Sterling rasped, his voice trembling. "Two hours ago, the State Bar ethics committee served me with a subpoena. Someone handed them certified handwriting analysis proving your son forged Clara’s signature on the Cayman loan documents. Federal marshals are currently standing in my lobby searching my client files!"

"What?!" Linda gasped, staggering back against the wall.

"Do not call this phone again!" Sterling panicked. "I am recusing myself from your representation immediately! If you take my advice, you and Jason will take whatever money you have in cash and leave the state before federal warrants are issued!"

The line went dead.

Linda stared at her phone, her mouth opening and closing in absolute terror. "Jason... Jason, he hung up on me!"

Jason didn't move. He sat on the bed staring at his hands— hands that were shaking violently. "It's over, Mom."

"It is not over!" Linda shrieked, rushing over and grabbing his shoulders, shaking him forcefully. "We have rights! You are her husband! Under state law, a husband has rights to marital property! We’ll go to the news! We’ll call the reporters! We’ll tell them that rich heiress Clara Vance beat herself up to frame her husband and ruin his business!"

Before Jason could answer, a heavy, loud knock echoed off the wooden door of the motel room.

Linda gasped, clutching her throat. "Is that... is that the police?"

"Open the door, Mr. Carter!" a booming voice shouted from outside. "Process server for the District Court!"

Jason slowly got up, stepped over his mother’s fallen purse, and unlatched the heavy chain lock.

Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a leather jacket holding a thick, legal-sized yellow envelope. He looked at Jason, checked a photograph on his phone, and thrust the envelope into Jason’s chest.

"Jason Carter?" the server asked.

"Yes," Jason muttered numbly.

"You’ve been served," the man declared smoothly. "Emergency hearing for Temporary Restraining Order, Civil Asset Seizure, and Preliminary Injunction. Tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM, Department 12 of the County Superior Court. Don't be late."

The man turned around and walked down the exterior motel balcony, disappearing into the parking lot.

Jason opened the heavy envelope. Inside were nearly two hundred pages of legal filings, backed by thick stacks of bank statements, medical reports, forensic handwriting analyses, and high-resolution photographs of the bruised face Clara had suffered when Linda shoved her through the glass table.

Attached to the very front page was a sticky note with three handwritten sentences in Clara’s elegant script:

“I gave you six years to love me. I’m giving you six days to survive me. See you in court, Jason.”

Linda grabbed the note, read it, and let out a high-pitched, hysterical scream, tearing the paper into tiny pieces and throwing them into the air. "She’s insane! She’s a monster!"

"No, Mom," Jason said, dropping the heavy legal file onto the table, his eyes completely hollowed out by fear. "She isn't insane. She’s rich. And we just proved to her that we don't have a single dollar left to fight back."
