Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Carter Enterprises

By noon, the news of the court’s decision had sent shockwaves through the financial sector.

At the headquarters of Carter Enterprises—a boutique architectural firm occupying the twelfth floor of a glass tower downtown—the atmosphere was pure panic.

Jason stood in the center of the firm's open-plan office, surrounded by fifty employees, project managers, and junior architects. His clothes were rumpled, his hair uncombed, and his eyes bloodshot.

"Listen to me, everyone!" Jason shouted, waving his hands frantically. "It’s just a temporary cash-flow hiccup! The bank is releasing our payroll clearing accounts by three o'clock! Nobody leave their desks!"

Just then, the glass doors of the reception area slid open.

Four men in dark blue jackets bearing the yellow letters FBI walked into the office, accompanied by three investigators from the State Securities and Exchange Commission.

The lead agent, Special Agent David Miller, walked straight up to Jason, pulling a federal search warrant from his jacket.

"Jason Carter?" Agent Miller asked smoothly.

Jason backed away, his heels hitting the desk of his senior designer. "What... what is this?"

"Federal search and seizure warrant for Carter Enterprises," Agent Miller announced loudly so the entire office could hear. "We are executing a warrant regarding bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud involving offshore transfers to the Cayman Islands."

Shrieks and gasps echoed through the office as junior architects immediately began grabbing their bags, pulling their personal coats from their chairs, and rushing toward the fire exits.

"Everyone leave your workstations immediately!" another federal agent called out. "Step away from the computers! Do not attempt to delete or modify any files!"

"You can't do this!" Jason screamed, grabbing Agent Miller’s arm. "This is my company! I built this!"

Agent Miller pulled his arm free with cold precision. "You didn't build it, Mr. Carter. According to federal grand jury records, you funded it using twenty-four forged loan guarantees backed by your wife's private trust. The building owner has already canceled your commercial lease for non-payment of rent."

Behind the agents, two building maintenance workers walked into the reception area holding heavy toolboxes.

With practiced speed, they began unscrewing the silver lettering that spelled out CARTER ENTERPRISES on the glass wall behind the reception desk, dropping the metal letters into a plastic trash bucket with loud, metallic clatters.

Across the street, standing on the observation deck of a coffee shop on the fourth floor, Clara stood watching through the clear glass windows.

She held a warm cup of dark coffee in her hands, watching the federal agents carry heavy server racks and box after box of files out through the glass doors of Jason's ruined office.

Evelyn walked up beside her, holding two fresh legal documents.

"The building manager just signed the lease termination," Evelyn reported softly. "By five o'clock today, the furniture will be auctioned off to satisfy the building's back rent."

Clara took a slow sip of her coffee, her expression completely calm.

"And Linda?" Clara asked.

"She tried to check into the Ritz-Carlton using a corporate credit card that hadn't been canceled yet," Evelyn smiled grimly. "The card was declined at the front desk, and when she refused to leave the lobby, the hotel management had her arrested for criminal trespass and theft of services. She’s currently sitting in the county jail waiting for a bail hearing."

Clara turned away from the window, looking at her friend.

"She wanted me to stay in that hospital room, Evelyn," Clara murmured, her thumb tracing the rim of her coffee cup. "She wanted me to spend the rest of my life believing that I was weak, that I was useless, and that I belonged under their thumb."

"And now?" Evelyn asked.

"Now," Clara said, setting her cup down on the table, "we go meet the grand jury."
