Chapter 7 - The Double-Edged Ledger

"You really think my father didn't prepare for you, Alejandro?" Catherine said, her voice dropping to a cold, mocking register that stopped Garza in his tracks.
Garza paused, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger of his pistol. "What are you talking about, Catherine? The box is open. The files are mine."
"Look at the digital drives, Garza," Victor said, stepping in front of his wife. "They aren't standard storage units. They are dual-node encryption drives. If you remove them from this vault without the active network link from the Williams Foundation main server upstairs, they’ll trigger a hard-wipe. You’ll be left with nothing but blank silicon."
Garza’s face darkened, his jaw tightening. "You’re lying. You’re trying to buy time."
"He’s not lying, Alejandro," Catherine said. She reached into her pocket, pulling out her mobile phone, which was displaying an active, secure data transfer screen. "The moment the biometric lock opened, the foundation’s server began uploading the backup files to a secure cloud drive managed by the Federal Attorney General’s office. If my phone’s signal drops, or if I don't input my safety code every five minutes, the transfer completes automatically. The names of every official you bought, every property deed you forged... it will be on the Attorney General’s desk before the sun sets."
Garza’s breathing went shallow. He looked at the phone in her hand, then at the open transit chest. He realized that the dynamic had completely shifted. He wasn't holding the cards; he was holding a live grenade with the pin pulled.
"You’d destroy your own family name, Catherine?" Garza hissed. "If those files go public, Marcus’s legacy is finished. The Williams name will be synonymous with cartel corruption forever. Your precious center will be shut down. Your husband will go to prison as an accessory."
"The Williams name was already cleansed in the fire, Garza," Victor said, his voice carrying the absolute certainty of a man who had already lost everything once and survived. "We don't care about the legacy. We care about the future. And our future doesn't have room for you."
From the ladder above, a sudden, loud commotion broke out.
The sound of heavy boots, wood splintering, and a sharp, authoritative voice echoed down the shaft.
"Federal Police! Nobody move!"
Brian Smith’s face appeared at the top of the hatch, his old police shield flashing in the work lamp's light, alongside four fully armed federal tactical officers.
"It’s over, Garza," Brian called down, his voice cold and steady. "Your scouts outside have already been detained. Drop the weapon."
Garza looked at Victor, then at Catherine, his eyes filled with a desperate, feral rage. For a second, Victor thought the older man would pull the trigger, choosing to end it all in a final, bloody statement.
But the survival instinct that had kept Garza alive for decades won out. He slowly lowered the silver pistol, letting it fall into the shallow water of the vault floor with a wet, heavy splash.

"You’re fools," Garza whispered as the tactical officers scrambled down the ladder to pin him to the floor. "You think you’ve won? You’ve just signed your own death warrants. The people on those lists... they won't let you live to testify."
"Let them try, Garza," Victor said, pulling Catherine close to his chest as the officers dragged the architect away. "We’ve got a very strong foundation."
