Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Valley

The winter of 2026 arrived with a crisp, clean wind that swept through the valley of Mexico City, clearing the smog and revealing the majestic, snow-capped peaks of Popocatépetl in the distance.

On a cold, bright Saturday afternoon, Victor and Catherine stood on the rooftop terrace of the Catherine Williams Support Center. The courtyard below was busy with the preparations for the winter festival, the neighborhood children running through the open spaces, their laughter rising like a warm mist into the cool air.

Victor wrapped his heavy wool coat tighter around his shoulders, his arm sliding around Catherine’s waist, pulling her close. She rested her head against his shoulder, her hand sliding into his pocket, her fingers curling around his warm palm.

"We did it, Victor," Catherine said, her voice a soft, peaceful sigh against the wind. "The ledger is finally balanced."

"It’s more than balanced, Catherine," Victor said, looking out over the sprawling, vibrant city that lay before them. "It’s open. And for the first time in our lives, we get to write the next chapter ourselves."

Below them, the neon signs of the Northside district began to flicker to life in the gathering twilight. But they didn't look cold, or gray, or dangerous anymore. They looked like a constellation of small, bright stars, casting a warm, unbroken light across the path that had led them out of the darkness and into the morning.

Victor looked down at his watch. The second hand swept forward, smooth, steady, and silent—marking the quiet, beautiful rhythm of a life that was finally, perfectly home.
