Chapter 2 - The Awakening of the Dragon

The quiet hum of the postpartum ward was a stark contrast to the storm raging inside Evelyn's chest. Beside her, the three clear bassinets held her newborn sons—Leo, Arthur, and Noah. They were tiny, fragile, and utterly dependent on her.

Evelyn stared at the closed door where Adrian and Celeste had exited. The scent of Celeste’s expensive perfume still lingered, a suffocating reminder of their intrusion. She looked down at her hands, pale and swollen from the IV fluids and the toll of carrying triplets to term.

“Look at you. No one would want you now.”

Adrian’s words echoed in her mind, not as a wound, but as a catalyst. For five years, she had lived as the supportive, quiet wife of Adrian Vale, a rising real estate mogul in Chicago. She had shrunk herself to fit his ego, hiding her background, her education, and her family's immense influence because Adrian had always insisted he wanted a "self-made life" without the shadow of her parents' gargantuan legacy.

Evelyn’s maiden name was Vance.

In the global shipping, tech, and banking sectors, the Vance name was not just respected; it was feared. Her father, Alistair Vance, was a billionaire patriarch whose quiet decisions could shift international markets overnight. Her mother, Eleanor Vance, was a brilliant legal minds who had trained some of the country’s top federal judges.

They had warned her about Adrian. They had seen through his charming, hungry smile five years ago. But Evelyn had been young, idealistic, and deeply in love. She had wanted to prove she could build a life on her own.

She picked up her phone with a steady hand and pressed the speed dial.

"Dad," she said, her voice no longer cracking. The tears had dried, replaced by a cold, calculating focus. "They just left."

"I heard," Alistair Vance’s voice was like deep, heavy velvet over the secure line. "Your mother and I have already landed at O'Hare. We are in the limousine now, heading to the hospital. Evelyn, my darling, the five-year trial is over. You tried your way. Now, we do it the Vance way."

"The house," Evelyn said softly, her eyes looking out the window at the gray Chicago skyline. "Adrian said it's already transferred. He must have forged my signature on the title deed while I was in the ICU last week."

"Then he has committed a federal crime," Eleanor Vance’s sharp, precise voice joined the call from the speakerphone. "I have already contacted the District Attorney and the federal housing authority. We are not just taking the house back, Evelyn. We are taking everything he has ever touched, built, or dreamed of. But first, we secure you and my grandsons."

"The babies are beautiful, Mom," Evelyn said, a soft, maternal warmth cutting through her coldness. "They have my eyes."

"And they will have the Vance empire," Alistair said. "Rest now, Evelyn. Your father is coming."

Ten minutes later, the door to the private VIP suite opened. Two burly men in tailored black suits stepped in first, scanning the room with military precision. They were followed by a tall, elegant older couple.

Alistair Vance, dressed in a charcoal-gray bespoke suit with a silver pocket watch, walked to the side of the bed. Beside him, Eleanor Vance, wearing a cream-colored silk trench coat and her signature pearl necklace, immediately knelt beside the bassinets, her eyes softening as she looked at her three grandsons.

Alistair leaned down and kissed Evelyn’s forehead. "You did well, sweetheart. You brought three miracles into this world."

"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you, Dad," Evelyn whispered.

Alistair smiled, a dangerous, dark expression that had made many CEOs collapse in boardrooms. "Do not apologize for having a good heart, Evelyn. But Adrian Vale made a fatal mistake. He forgot that the only reason he was allowed to play in our sandbox was because you liked him. Now, we are taking the sandbox back."
