Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea

Six months after the trial, Adrian Vale was living a very different life.

The Gold Coast penthouse had been seized, his bank accounts cleared to pay back the embezzled funds, and his reputation in Chicago’s real estate market was permanently ruined. No bank would lend to him, and no firm would hire him. He was living in a cramped, damp studio apartment on the outskirts of the city, his days spent drinking cheap whiskey and watching the news of Evelyn’s massive success on his small television.

Celeste Monroe was serving her sentence in a women's correctional facility, her fancy clothes replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. She had cut off all contact with Adrian, realizing he had nothing left to offer her.

One rainy afternoon, Adrian stood outside the gates of the Geneva estate.

He was wearing a wet, cheap coat, his hair matted, his face thin and covered in stubble. He looked like a shadow of his former self. He approached the intercom at the massive iron gates, his finger trembling as he pressed the button.

"Yes? Who is it?" a security guard's voice asked over the speaker.

"It's... it's Adrian," he whispered. "I need to see Evelyn. Please. Just for five minutes. I want to see my sons."

There was a long silence.

Then, the gate clicked open.

Adrian let out a ragged breath, walking up the long, winding driveway toward the grand stone house. He expected to be met by security guards, but instead, Evelyn was waiting for him on the covered porch.

She was wearing a cream-colored cashmere sweater, her hair styled in elegant waves, looking more beautiful and regal than he had ever seen her. Beside her stood Marcus, the massive security chief, his hands clasped in front of him.

Adrian stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking up at her.

"Evelyn..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "You look... you look incredible."

"What do you want, Adrian?" Evelyn asked, her voice calm and level, devoid of any anger or resentment. It was the voice of a woman who had completely moved on, and that was what hurt him the most.

"I... I wanted to see the boys," Adrian said, his eyes scanning the windows of the house. "I miss them, Evelyn. I made a mistake. A terrible mistake. I was stupid, and I was greedy. But I still love you. We can start over. I don't need the money. I just want my family back."

Evelyn looked at him, her eyes soft with a mixture of pity and indifference.

"You don't miss the boys, Adrian," she said quietly. "You miss the life my money bought you. You miss the status, the luxury, and the respect you thought you had earned."

"That's not true!" Adrian cried, taking a step forward, but Marcus immediately stepped in front of him, his massive frame blocking the stairs.

"Do not take another step, Mr. Vale," Marcus warned.

Adrian backed away, tears of desperation streaming down his face. "Evelyn, please! I'm living in a dump! I have nothing! My father won't even speak to me! You have everything now. Can't you just show some mercy?"

"I showed you mercy when I didn't send you to prison, Adrian," Evelyn said, her voice steady. "I allowed you to sign the confession and walk away with your freedom. That was the last gift I will ever give you. Now, I suggest you leave my property before I have Marcus call the police for violating the protective order."

Adrian stared at her, realizing that the woman he had once sneered at, the woman he had called "ugly" and "useless" in that hospital room, was now a queen sitting on a throne far beyond his reach.

Without another word, he turned around and walked down the driveway, his head bowed against the cold rain, disappearing into the gray mist.
