Chapter 5 - The Legal Guillotine

The offices of Vance & Associates occupied the top three floors of the prestigious Prudential Plaza in downtown Chicago, offering a panoramic view of Lake Michigan.

Evelyn sat at the head of a long marble conference table, flanked by her mother and a team of eight high-powered corporate and criminal attorneys. She was dressed in a tailored black suit, her eyes sharp and focused.

On the opposite side of the table sat Adrian, his face pale and haggard, and his attorney, a nervous-looking man named Richard Sterling.

Adrian’s mistress, Celeste, was not allowed in the room; she was currently sitting in the waiting area, her black Birkin bag clutched tightly in her lap like a shield against the storm.

"Let’s skip the pleasantries, Richard," Eleanor Vance said, tossing a thick, blue-bound folder onto the table. "This is the forensic audit of Vale Development’s financial activities over the last twenty-four months."

Richard Sterling opened the folder, his eyes scanning the pages. Within seconds, his professional composure collapsed. He looked at Adrian, his brow furrowed in alarm.

"Adrian..." Sterling whispered. "Is this accurate?"

"What is it?" Adrian muttered, trying to maintain an air of defiance. "They're just trying to intimidate us."

"It is a record of twenty-two distinct instances of wire fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement of corporate funds for personal use," Eleanor said, her voice sharp as a razor. "You used company money to purchase a luxury penthouse in Gold Coast under Celeste Monroe's name, as well as multiple luxury vehicles, jewelry, and international trips. Totaling four point six million dollars."

She paused, leaning forward.

"And most importantly, we have the forensic analysis of the signature on the Lake Forest property transfer. The digital timestamp shows it was applied to the document while my daughter was under general anesthesia during her emergency C-section. That is felony forgery and identity theft, Mr. Vale."

Adrian stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. "This is a setup! Evelyn, tell them! We agreed to share our assets! You knew about those transfers!"

Evelyn looked at him, her eyes empty of any warmth, any memory of the love she had once felt.

"I knew you were greedy, Adrian," Evelyn said quietly. "But I didn't think you were stupid enough to forge my signature while I was fighting for my life and the lives of our three sons."

"Evelyn, please," Adrian’s voice cracked, a hint of desperation creeping in. "We can settle this. I’ll sign the divorce papers. I’ll give you the house back. Just don’t do this to my company. We have over two hundred employees!"

"Your company has already been restructured," Alistair Vance said, walking into the room from the side door. "Vance Capital has exercised its right of foreclosure due to the breach of the investment covenant. As of 9:00 AM today, Vale Development has been rebranded as Evelyn Development Group. You are no longer the CEO, Adrian. In fact, you own exactly zero percent of the company."

Adrian stared at Alistair, his jaw slack. "What?"

"We are offering you a deal, Adrian," Eleanor said, sliding a single sheet of paper toward him. "You will sign a full, unconditional confession to the financial crimes and the forgery. You will surrender all personal assets, including your luxury vehicles and the Gold Coast penthouse. And you will sign a sole custody agreement giving Evelyn full physical and legal custody of Leo, Arthur, and Noah, with zero visitation rights."

"And if I refuse?" Adrian growled, his eyes dark with desperate anger.

May you like

"If you refuse," Eleanor said, "the District Attorney, who is currently waiting in my office downstairs, will file the charges immediately. You will be arrested before you reach the lobby of this building. And with the evidence we have, you will spend the next fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

Richard Sterling looked at Adrian, shaking his head. "Adrian... sign it. There is no defense against this. If you go to trial, you will lose everything and go to prison for a long time."
