Chapter 2: The Queen's Court

The grand courtyard was a masterpiece of elegance. Long imperial tables were draped in ivory silk, adorned with gold cutlery, crystal glassware, and thousands of fresh white roses. A live string quartet played softly in the background, the music floating through the warm afternoon air.
At the head of the central table stood Elena.
The plain cream dress from the courthouse was gone. In its place, she wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald silk gown that commanded the room. Around her neck sat a flawless collar of emeralds and diamonds that caught the sunlight, radiating a blinding brilliance. Her hair was pulled back into a sophisticated updoface, revealing a calm, serene expression. She didn't look angry. She didn't look vengeful. She looked completely, utterly untouchable.
Beside her stood an older man with silver hair and a sharp, piercing gaze, dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit. Carlos Varela. The reclusive billionaire titan of Guadalajara.
"Ah, the Mendoza family," Carlos said, his deep voice carrying an undeniable weight as Alejandro and Doña Victoria froze at the entrance of the courtyard. "We were wondering if you would actually show up."
"Carlos... Señor Varela," Doña Victoria stammered, her social ambitions instantly warring with her absolute terror. She had spent three years trying to secure a five-minute meeting with this man to secure shipping contracts for her family's business. "What... what are you doing here? And why is Elena..."
"Elena is my daughter," Carlos said simply, placing a proud hand on Elena’s shoulder.
The revelation hit the courtyard like a thunderbolt. Several Mendoza aunts gasped, and Paola nearly dropped her glass of water. Alejandro felt all the air leave his lungs.
"Your... your daughter?" Alejandro choked out, his eyes darting frantically between Carlos and the woman he had treated like an uneducated peasant for five years. "No. That’s impossible. She told me her father ran a small organic agave plot in Tequila."
"I do," Carlos replied with a dark, dangerous smile. "I own forty thousand hectares of it. It supplies eighty percent of the tequila exported to Europe. Elena wanted a simple life, Alejandro. She wanted to be loved for who she was, not for her family’s bank account. When she met you, she begged me to hide our wealth. She wanted to see if the man she loved had a soul brave enough to protect a simple girl."
Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking softly against the marble tiles. The absolute silence of the courtyard was deafening as she looked at her ex-husband.
"My father warned me, Alejandro," Elena said, her voice smooth and even, devoid of any trembling. "He told me to never reveal the size of my shield to a man, but to let him show me what he would do if he believed I had none. For five years, I gave you my silence. I gave you my devotion. And in return, your family treated me like garbage. You called me ordinary. You told everyone you saved me from a plain life."
She turned her gaze to Doña Victoria, whose face was now completely bloodless. "You went through my things, Victoria. You insulted my background at every Christmas dinner. You smiled while your son humiliated me. You thought I was silent because I was weak. But I was only collecting the truth."

"Elena, mija," Doña Victoria pleaded, her voice dropping into a desperate, pathetic tone as she took a step forward. "It was all just family teasing! You know we love you. We are a family!"
"We were never a family," Elena replied coldly. "And today isn't a celebration of my new life. It’s an execution of yours."
