Chapter 7: The Queen’s Welcome

The Mendoza family filed into the grand courtyard like intruders in a palace they once mocked. Sunlight filtered through bougainvillea-draped arches, casting golden patterns on terracotta tiles. Elena Varela stood at the center beside a long teak table laden with fresh fruits, artisanal cheeses, and chilled aguas frescas. She wore a simple yet elegant white linen dress that flowed like water, her dark hair cascading in soft waves. No heavy jewelry, yet she radiated authority.
“Welcome to Valle Verde,” Elena said, her voice calm and warm, carrying none of the bitterness they expected. Her eyes met Alejandro’s. The man who had discarded her five years ago after their childless marriage looked ashen.
Doña Victoria recovered first. “Elena, this is... quite the production. Did the divorce settlement stretch this far?”
Elena smiled faintly. “Please, sit. You’ve traveled far.” Servants appeared with chairs. Julián hovered protectively.
As they sat, Elena revealed fragments: after the divorce, she had reconnected with her estranged mother’s side—the Varela family. Her grandfather, the patriarch, had passed months ago, leaving her the majority stake. The “schoolteacher” had been a cover; she had been groomed quietly.
Alejandro stammered apologies mixed with demands. “We deserve explanation. This changes everything.”
Drama ignited when Paola accused Elena of hiding wealth to trap them. Elena remained poised, sharing documents proving the Mendozas’ attempts to ruin her post-divorce—blacklisting, rumors.
Tension peaked as Alejandro’s brother challenged the estate’s authenticity. Security subtly reinforced boundaries. Elena offered a tour, exposing the empire’s scale: vineyards, stables, private airstrip.
