Chapter 10 - The Garden of Light

Three years later.

The spring sun was bright and warm over the rolling hills of Lake Minnetonka.

The wooden cabin where Alistair had first brought Nellie on that freezing night five years ago had been expanded into a beautiful, sunlit family home surrounded by lush gardens, blooming apple trees, and vibrant flower beds.

In the backyard, overlooking the blue water of the lake, stood a small stone garden shrine surrounded by white lilies and yellow sunflowers. A carved wooden bench sat beside it, bearing the simple inscription: SAWYER’S GARDEN.

Alistair sat on the wooden bench, wearing comfortable cotton clothes, reading a medical research journal. At forty-nine, his dark hair was silvered at the temples, but his eyes were full of life, health, and profound content.

From the back porch of the house, Nellie stepped out into the afternoon light.

She wore a bright summer dress, her hair tied back in a loose pony, holding a tray with two glasses of iced lemonade.

Walking beside her, holding her hand with tiny, chubby fingers, was a three-year-old girl with dark curly hair and bright, curious amber eyes.

Her name was Hope Sawyer Carpenter.

"Daddy!" the little girl squealed happily, letting go of Nellie's hand and running across the green lawn on her little feet.

Alistair set his journal aside, his face lighting up with absolute joy. He caught the little girl in his arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled uncontrollably, before pulling her tight against his chest.

"Hey, princess," Alistair laughed, kissing her chubby cheek. "Did you help Mommy make the lemonade?"

"I stirred the sugar!" Hope announced proudly, pointing her little hand toward the porch.

Nellie walked over, setting the tray on the rustic table beside the bench. She sat down next to Alistair, leaning her head against his shoulder as he put one arm around her, holding their daughter in his lap.

Little Hope looked over at the garden shrine, her wide amber eyes taking in the carved stone and the bright yellow sunflowers blooming in the sun.

"Is that big brother's garden?" Hope asked innocently, pointing her little finger.

Alistair and Nellie looked at each other, a gentle, loving smile passing between them.

"Yes, sweetheart," Nellie said softly, leaning over to kiss her daughter’s forehead. "That's your big brother Sawyer's garden. He watches over us every single day."

Hope nodded happily, reaching out her tiny hand to pick a bright yellow flower from a pot beside the bench, holding it up toward the sky. "Look, Sawyer! A flower for you!"

A soft, sweet breeze rustled through the leaves of the apple trees, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine across the lawn, making the water of the lake sparkle like millions of tiny diamonds under the spring sun.

Alistair pulled Nellie closer, wrapping his arms around his wife and his daughter, feeling the deep, unbreakable warmth of his family.

The dark overpass, the freezing wind, the arrogance of wealth, and the shadows of betrayal were gone forever.

In their place remained only truth, unconditional love, and a life reclaimed from the ashes—a legacy that would shine brightly and forever in the light.
