Chapter 2 - The Matriarch's Shield

The Carpenter estate in Wayzata stood like a fortress against the grey Minnesota winter. Manicured lawns, marble pillars, and tall iron gates separated the family from the rest of the world.

Alistair slammed the front door of the mansion shut, his heavy footsteps echoing across the polished limestone foyer.

"Alistair?"

Katie Carpenter stepped out of the formal drawing room. At seventy-two, she was still an imposing figure, impeccably coiffed in a midnight-blue wool dress, wearing her signature pearl necklace. She held a crystal glass of sherry, her eyes sharp and assessing.

"What is the meaning of this dramatic entrance?" Katie asked, adjusting her diamond rings. "I saw the afternoon news. You let those trashy journalists film you kneeling in the dirt in front of a homeless woman. Olivia is furious. The Gilbert family is calling a board meeting tomorrow to discuss damage control—"

"Sawyer," Alistair interrupted, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Katie froze. The glass in her hand tilted slightly, but her expression did not break. "What did you say?"

"Sawyer Fields," Alistair repeated, taking three steps toward her, pulling the documents from his briefcase and throwing them onto the glass coffee table between them. "My son. Your grandson."

Katie glanced down at the death certificate. She didn't flinch. She slowly set her sherry glass down on a silver tray.

"I see Marcus has been busy," she said smoothly, sitting down in a velvet armchair as if discussing a minor accounting discrepancy. "I told the legal department to shred those old development logs five years ago. I suppose loyalty is expensive these days."

"He was ten years old, Mom!" Alistair roared, his calm facade shattering into pure rage. "He was my son! You knew Nellie was pregnant when you forced me to divorce her! You lied to me! You told me she took thirty thousand dollars and moved to California!"

"Because she was a nobody!" Katie spat back, her eyes hardening into steel. "She was a diner waitress with no family, no connections, and no future! You were an ambitious young surgeon, Alistair! If you had stayed married to that fragile girl, Crestview would have collapsed under debt. The Gilbert merger gave us eighty million dollars in capital! It built your career! It made you Director!"

"You killed my son!" Alistair screamed, tears running down his face. "He died under a pile of crushed concrete on a site you left unsecured! And when Nellie tried to get justice, you blew up her house!"

"Don't be dramatic, Alistair," Katie said coldly, raising her chin. "The construction accident was an unfortunate tragedy. The boy shouldn't have been trespassing. As for the house fire, it was an electrical issue. I simply ensured that the investigation didn't drag our name through the mud."

"You made her lose her leg!" Alistair's voice shook. "She is living under a bridge on crutches taped together with duck tape! She eats out of trash cans while you sit here sipping sherry!"

"She is where she belongs," Katie said without a shred of remorse. "She refused to take the settlement money five years ago. She refused to move away. She chose to stay in this city, wallowing in her misery, waiting for an opportunity to ruin you. Look at what happened today! She humiliated you in front of every camera in Minneapolis!"

Alistair looked at his mother as if seeing her for the very first time. The woman who had tucked him into bed, who had taught him how to hold a scalpel, was completely hollow inside.

"You are sick," Alistair whispered, backing away from her. "You are an absolute monster."

"I protected this family!" Katie stood up, her voice sharp as a whip. "And you will protect it too! Tomorrow morning, you will hold a press conference with Olivia. You will state that the woman under the bridge is an emotionally unstable imposter trying to extort Crestview. You will offer her a private mental health commitment, and this scandal will die!"

Alistair stared at her for a long moment. Then, a slow, dark smile touched his lips.

"No, Mom," Alistair said softly. "The scandal is just beginning. Because as of this moment, I am resigning from the Crestview Board. And I am turning these documents over to the State Attorney General."

Katie’s face drained of all color. "You wouldn't dare. You would destroy yourself! You would lose your position, your wealth, your marriage!"

"I lost everything fifteen years ago when I listened to you," Alistair said, turning his back on her. "I'm going to get my wife back."
