Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Battle

The emergency board meeting of Whitaker Enterprises took place on the eightieth floor of the Whitaker Tower in downtown Boston.

The glass-walled boardroom offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the harbor, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocating. Richard Sterling sat at the center of the mahogany table, flanked by five corporate attorneys, while the rest of the board members sat in tense silence.

When the heavy frosted glass doors opened, I walked into the room wearing a sharp gray suit, holding my leather binder. Standing right beside me was Eleanor Vance, along with two security guards provided by Arthur's estate.

Graham did not sit at the executive table. He sat in the public gallery seating near the back wall, dressed in a simple dark suit, keeping his head down, refusing to claim any authority he no longer possessed.

"Miss Hart," Richard Sterling sneered, not bothering to stand up. "I see you brought your legal nanny. Shall we skip the pleasantries? We have a resolution on the table to liquidate the South Boston housing sector. We need your signature to validate the proxy vote."

"I've reviewed the proposal, Mr. Sterling," I said, walking up to the head of the table and placing my binder down. "And my answer is no."

Richard's eyes narrowed into slits. "No? Do you even understand the financial implications, girl? Those properties generate less than two percent yield! The Sterling Group has already secured three hundred million dollars in development capital for the luxury towers!"

"Those properties house three hundred working-class families, Mr. Sterling," I replied, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent boardroom. "Single mothers, veterans, elderly residents who have lived in South Boston for forty years. As the sole trustee representing fifty-one percent of the voting shares, I am vetoing the sale."

"You can't do that!" Richard roared, slamming his fist onto the glass table. "You know nothing about corporate governance! You're an uneducated charity worker playing with money you didn't earn!"

"She earned those shares by raising Arthur Whitaker's grandchildren while your family was plotting to strip the company clean," Graham’s voice suddenly cut through the room.

He stood up from the back row, walking slowly down the center aisle. He didn't look like the panicked, broken man from the airport. He moved with a calm, dangerous authority that made Richard Sterling flinch.

"You're not even on the board anymore, Graham!" Richard spat. "You resigned!"

"He resigned as CEO, Richard," Eleanor Vance interjected smoothly, opening a legal document from her briefcase. "However, under the terms of Arthur Whitaker's trust, Miss Hart has appointed Graham Whitaker as her chief strategic advisor."

Richard stared at us in absolute disbelief. "You... you two are working together?!"

"We are protecting my father's legacy, Richard," Graham said, stopping right beside my chair and placing his hand gently on the back of my seat. "And we are stripping the Sterling Group of its board representation effective immediately due to ethical violations and conflict of interest."

"You can't fire me!" Richard screamed, his face turning purple.

"I have fifty-one percent of the votes, Mr. Sterling," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "I just did. Security will escort you from the building."

As the guards stepped forward to remove the shouting, enraged Richard Sterling from the room, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence.

Graham looked down at me, a look of profound respect and admiration burning in his eyes. For eighteen months, he had believed he was the only one who could run this empire. Now, he was watching the woman he had abandoned command the entire room with a moral strength he had never possessed.

"That was impressive, Miss Hart," Graham whispered, a tiny smile tugging at his lips.

"I learned from the best," I whispered back, a faint flush touching my cheeks. "Now let's go home. The kids are waiting."
