Chapter 9 - The Promise

Six months later, on an early autumn afternoon, we were married in the middle of the sunflower field on our farm.

It wasn't a grand high-society wedding with hundreds of corporate guests, news cameras, or security details. There were no politicians or board members.

There were only twenty people present: my sister Sarah, Eleanor Vance, Mrs. Gable, a few close neighbors from Freeport, and our three children, who served as the most adorable ring bearers and flower girls the state of Maine had ever seen.

The sun was setting behind the pine trees, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold, orange, and purple.

I wore a simple lace wedding dress with a wreath of yellow wildflowers in my hair. Graham wore a dark gray suit, looking extraordinarily handsome, his eyes locked onto mine as I walked down the aisle carved through the tall sunflowers.

When I reached him, he took both my hands in his, his grip warm, steady, and strong.

The local justice of the peace smiled at us. "Graham, do you take Emily to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for as long as you both shall live?"

Graham looked deep into my eyes, his voice clear and resonant, echoing across the quiet field:

"I do. I promise to cherish you, to honor you, and to spend every single day of my life proving to you that my heart belongs only to you and our children."

"And Emily," the justice continued, "do you take Graham to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do," I said, a tear of pure happiness slipping down my cheek. "I promise to love you, to trust you, and to stand beside you through every season of our lives."

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the justice declared. "You may kiss the bride."

Graham didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as he pressed his lips against mine in a long, passionate kiss while our small gathering of family and friends cheered and clapped.

Leo, Maya, and Chloe came running up the aisle, throwing petals into the air, giggling wildly as Graham scooped up all three of them into his arms, kissing their cheeks one by one while I wrapped my arms around his neck.

As the stars began to twinkle over the quiet farm, I looked at my family—at the billionaire who had lost his way, at the three beautiful children who had brought us back together, and at the bright, beautiful future stretching out before us.
