Chapter 7 - The Grave Beneath the Docks

Dominic stepped into the study, his hands slightly bruised, his dark coat dusted with snow.

He stopped when he saw Layla standing behind his desk, holding the yellowed clinic appointment card in her trembling hands.

"Layla?" Dominic asked softly. "Why are you out of bed?"

Layla held up the card, her eyes shining with mixed emotions. "Julianna hid this from you. Four months ago, when I shattered the glass... I dropped this on your floor. Julianna came in right after I left and kicked it under your desk."

Dominic took three swift strides across the room, taking the small card from her fingers.

He looked at the date, the clinic stamp, and the handwritten note on the back: Father: Dominic Gallow.

A deep, guttural growl rose from Dominic’s chest. The realization that Julianna Vance had intentionally hidden his children from him for four months—leaving Layla to starve and struggle in the cold—shattered the last remnants of his self-control.

"She knew," Dominic whispered, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. "She knew about my sons four months ago."

"She didn't just want me gone, Dominic," Layla said, stepping close to him and laying her hand against his warm chest. "She wanted us dead. The tea tonight... it was Julianna."

Dominic dropped the card onto the desk, wrapped his broad arms around Layla’s waist, and pulled her tightly against his body. He buried his face in her soft hair, holding her with a fierce, protective desperation.

"I am sorry, Layla," Dominic breathed against her neck, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "I am so sorry I let you walk out of that penthouse. I am sorry I didn't see your pain."

Layla leaned into his warmth, tears slipping down her cheeks. "You didn't know, Dominic. But you know now."

"Yes," Dominic said, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes. His amber gaze was dark, dangerous, and utterly devoted. "I know now. And I will burn the Vance family to the ground for what they tried to do to you."

At 2:00 AM, a convoy of four black armored vehicles pulled out of the Gallow estate, heading toward the private industrial docks along the southern shore of Lake Michigan.

Inside the rear SUV sat Marcus Vance, bound in heavy zip-ties, his face bruised and bloody.

Dominic sat opposite him, smoking a cigar, his expression as unreadable as granite.

"Dominic! Please!" Marcus begged, weeping violently. "It was Julianna! She planned everything! She bought the offshore accounts, she made the deal with the Moretti cartel! She promised them your dock territories if they helped her eliminate the maid and your babies!"

Dominic took a slow puff of his cigar, exhaling a thick plume of blue smoke into the dark interior of the SUV.

"Where is she, Marcus?" Dominic asked quietly.

"At the warehouse on Pier 42!" Marcus squealed instantly, desperate to save his own life. "She’s meeting the Moretti bosses right now! They're signing the transfer deeds for your shipping lanes!"

Dominic tapped his phone screen. "Lev."

"Yes, Boss?" Lev answered from the lead vehicle.

"Surround Pier 42. Block the water exits. Leave no one alive except Julianna Vance."

"Understood, Boss."

Ten minutes later, the convoy arrived at Pier 42.

The massive steel warehouse was dark, surrounded by the crashing, icy waves of Lake Michigan. Inside, Julianna Vance stood near a table illuminated by halogen work lamps, accompanied by four senior captains of the Moretti cartel.

"Once Dominic is dead," Julianna was telling the Moretti boss, her voice echoing in the vast metal space, "I take over the Gallow development firm as his grieving fiancée, and you take the illegal docks. It's a clean trade."

BANG!

The heavy steel doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges by a controlled explosive charge.

Smoke and blinding white tactical light poured into the space.

Before the Moretti guards could draw their weapons, Dominic’s strike team poured into the warehouse, executing precise, lethal fire. In less than forty seconds, the four cartel captains lay dead on the concrete floor.

Julianna screamed, backing away toward the edge of the open cargo bay overlooking the black, freezing waters of the lake.

Dominic walked through the swirling smoke, stepping over the fallen men, his black coat billowing around his boots like the wings of a vengeful angel.

Julianna backed up until her heels hit the edge of the concrete drop-off. Ten feet below, the icy lake churned violently against the rusty steel pilings.

"Dominic..." Julianna gasped, her eyes wide with sheer terror. "Dominic, wait! I did it for us! That maid... she was a nobody! She was going to ruin your reputation! I wanted to give you legitimate heirs from a real family!"

Dominic stopped five feet away from her. He looked down at her with pure, absolute disgust.

"You tried to poison my sons, Julianna," Dominic said, his voice flat and terrifyingly quiet. "You hid them from me for four months. You left the woman I love to starve in the freezing rain."

Julianna’s breath hitched. "The woman you... love?"

"You chose my grave, Julianna," Dominic whispered, taking one final step forward. "Now choose yours."

He didn't touch her. He didn't push her.

He simply raised his Sig Sauer pistol and fired a single shot into the concrete between her feet.

Julianna shrieked in terror, lost her footing on the slick edge, and plummeted backward into the pitch-black, freezing waters of Lake Michigan.
