Chapter 6 - The Trial of Reclaim

Six months later, the Miami-Dade County Courthouse sat cool and solemn under a bright morning sky.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the trial of State of Florida v. Derek Foster came to its dramatic conclusion.
Derek sat at the defense table in a cheap, off-the-rack suit that fit loosely around his sunken frame. Stress and financial ruin had aged him ten years; the smug, slick salesman who had once ordered his wife around was nowhere to be found. Beside him, Suzanne sat as a co-defendant, having accepted a plea bargain that required her to testify against her brother in exchange for a suspended sentence and five years of probation with mandatory financial restitution.
Skylar sat in the front row of the gallery, surrounded by her supportive friends, her attorney Eleanor, and her company director David.
The prosecutor stood before the judge, holding up the physical evidence: the medical photos of Skylar’s burns, the broken pieces of the ceramic cup recovered by police, and the clear audio recording.
“Your Honor,” the prosecutor declared, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. “The defendant did not simply lose his temper. He operated a systematic, multi-year campaign of domestic terror, financial abuse, and coercive control over his wife. When she finally dared to say the word 'no,' he responded with brutal physical violence.”
The judge, a formidable woman with sharp gray eyes, reviewed the documents on her bench. She turned her gaze down toward Derek.
“Mr. Foster,” the judge spoke, her voice cutting through the room like a hammer. “You exploited the trust of a hardworking woman. You stole from her, abused her, and treated her home as your personal domain while attempting to strip away her dignity. This court finds no mitigating circumstances for your actions.”
The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp CRACK.
“On the charge of felony aggravated battery, you are sentenced to seven years in state prison. On the charges of corporate fraud and grand larceny, you are sentenced to an additional four years, to run consecutively. You will pay full restitution to Skylar Bennett in the amount of $120,000, and a permanent, lifetime order of protection is hereby enacted.”
Derek sank back into his chair, his face completely devoid of color. Tears of desperation finally slipped down his cheeks, but no one in the courtroom felt pity for him.
As the bailiffs stepped forward and snapped steel handcuffs onto Derek’s wrists, leading him away toward the holding cells, he turned his head to look at Skylar one last time.
He expected to see hatred or vengeance in her eyes.

Instead, Skylar simply looked at him with cool, quiet indifference.
He had become a stranger to her—a small, pathetic ghost of a past she had completely outgrown.
