Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Foundation

A month after the trial, Skylar stood in the doorway of her Biscayne Bay apartment.

Contractors were busy at work, painting the walls a warm, soft shade of cream, installing fresh hardwood floors, and bringing in new, handcrafted furniture that Skylar had chosen herself.

Every piece of furniture, every frame, and every rug that Derek had ever touched had been removed and donated or thrown away. The apartment was no longer the site of her suffering—it was being reclaimed as her sanctuary.

Her phone chimed. It was a message from her bank:

COURT RESTITUTION TRANSFER RECEIVED: $45,000 (FIRST INSTALLMENT).

Skylar smiled faintly, slipping the phone into her pocket. She wasn't keeping the money for herself. She had already established a private foundation—The Bennett Sanctuary Fund—designed to provide emergency financial aid, legal representation, and temporary housing for women escaping domestic and financial abuse in the greater Miami area.

Later that evening, as the sun began to set over the sparkling waters of the bay, painting the sky in shades of gold, rose, and violet, Skylar sat on her balcony enjoying a quiet dinner.

A gentle knock sounded at her front door.

She walked over and opened it to reveal David Vance standing in the hallway, holding a magnificent bouquet of fresh white lilies and a bottle of fine wine.

“Am I interrupting?” David asked warmly, his dark eyes filled with genuine kindness and respect.

“Not at all,” Skylar smiled, stepping aside to invite him in. “Come on in, David.”

David walked into the bright, renovated living room, taking in the serene atmosphere. “It looks incredible in here, Skylar. It truly feels like a home now.”

“It is a home,” Skylar agreed, setting the flowers in a glass vase on the brand-new oak dining table. “My home.”

David smiled, handing her a leather folder he had brought with him. “I’m not here just as a friend bringing wine, though. I have some news from the board of directors.”

Skylar opened the folder. Inside was a formal appointment document signed by the executive committee of her logistics firm.

“Vice President of Regional Operations,” Skylar read aloud, her eyes widening in surprise.

“You earned it, Skylar,” David said gently, leaning against the counter. “You’ve run our logistics department better than anyone in the company’s history. The board recognized your brilliant work, your resilience, and your leadership. They want you leading the entire regional team.”

Skylar looked up from the paper, tears of genuine happiness welling in her eyes.

Six months ago, she had been trapped in a kitchen, burned, isolated, and told she was nothing. Today, she was a corporate vice president, the founder of a charitable foundation, and the sole owner of her life and destiny.
