Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

Spring returned once more, bringing the morning sun over the crest of the Rocky Mountains.
At six o'clock in the morning, the valley was quiet, covered in a soft blanket of golden light.
Ethan stood on the open wooden porch at the back of the mansion, wearing a simple flannel shirt, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.
He looked out over his land.
The glass greenhouse shimmered under the morning sun, surrounded by green fields of wildflowers. The playground stood silent, waiting for the afternoon laughter. And in the distance, the new regional children’s center in Denver was already operating, saving hundreds of lives every single month.
The heavy wooden door behind him clicked open.
Four small pairs of bare feet padded quietly across the warm wooden deck.
Ava, Mia, Chloe, and Grace walked out onto the porch, wearing their comfortable flannel pajamas, blinking sleepily against the bright morning light.
They didn't look like the terrified, starving shadows Ethan had found in the cold dining room sixteen months ago.
They were strong, healthy, loved, and whole.
"Daddy?" Ava whispered, rubbing her eyes. "What are you doing up so early?"
Ethan set his coffee mug down on the wooden railing, sank to his knees on the porch, and opened his arms wide.
"I was just waiting for my sun to rise," Ethan smiled softly.
All four girls squealed with joy, running across the wooden deck and throwing themselves into his arms, their warm laughter echoing across the silent mountain valley.

Ethan wrapped his arms around them, pulling them close against his chest, holding the entire universe in his embrace.
The dark was gone. The winter had ended. And the Whitmore family was home forever.
