Chapter 8 - The Final Stand of the Old Empire

Ethan walked down the long stone driveway alone.

Standing outside the closed iron gates was Arthur Vance—a man in his late fifties, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat and gold-rimmed glasses, holding a polished leather briefcase.

Beside him sat a sleek luxury town car with an engine idling softly in the mountain air.

When Arthur saw Ethan approaching, he stepped closer to the iron bars, adjusting his glasses with a practiced, aristocratic gesture.

"Ethan," Arthur said, his voice smooth, refined, and completely devoid of warmth. "Thank you for coming down. I was hoping we could speak privately."

Ethan stopped three feet from the gate, his hands resting casually in his pockets. He didn't open the iron lock.

"You have thirty seconds, Arthur," Ethan said coldly. "Say what you came to say."

Arthur let out a soft, condescending sigh. "Always so dramatic, Ethan. I came here as a representative of the Vance family estate. As you know, my brother Vance's assets were liquidated, and my niece Bianca is beginning a rather excessive prison sentence."

"Excessive?" Ethan repeated, a cold smile touching his lips. "She starved children, Arthur."

"She made terrible errors in judgment," Arthur corrected smoothly, waving his hand dismissively. "Errors fueled by youth and poor guidance. But I am not here to argue morality, Ethan. I am here to offer a business resolution."

Arthur opened his briefcase and pulled out a sleek silver folder.

"The Vance family still holds ancient mineral and land development rights to the northern ridge of this property," Arthur stated, pointing toward the towering pine-covered mountains behind the mansion. "Rights that were granted to our grandfather eighty years ago. Rights that are worth approximately forty million dollars."

Ethan didn't flinch. "And?"

"And," Arthur continued, leaning closer to the iron bars, "I am willing to sign over those mineral rights to you today, free of charge. In exchange, you will use your considerable influence with the Colorado governor to commute Bianca's sentence to house arrest at our family estate in Chicago."

Ethan looked at the silver folder. Then he looked at Arthur Vance’s cold, calculating eyes.

"You think forty million dollars buys my daughters' justice?" Ethan asked softly.

"I think forty million dollars is a practical settlement for a situation that has already been resolved," Arthur replied, his voice dropping into a subtle, threatening register. "If you refuse, Ethan... my firm will tie up the land rights to your northern ridge in federal litigation for the next decade. You’ll have survey crews, bulldozers, and legal injunctions on your doorstep every single month. Your quiet little sanctuary won't be so quiet anymore."

Ethan stared at him for three long seconds.

Then, Ethan reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and tapped a single icon.

"Gideon," Ethan spoke into the speaker. "Execute Strategy Omega."

Arthur frowned. "What is Strategy Omega?"

Ethan lowered his phone and looked at the older lawyer with a calm, absolute terrifying detachment.

"Ten minutes ago, when my security system identified your vehicle at the gate," Ethan explained, "my legal team in New York filed a criminal RICO indictment with the Illinois State Attorney General."

Arthur’s face paled slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"Did you really think I didn't research the Vance family law firm, Arthur?" Ethan asked softly. "Did you think I didn't know that your firm laundered thirty million dollars in offshore gambling funds for Bianca’s Chicago associates over the last three years?"

Arthur dropped his silver folder onto the gravel driveway. "That... that's a lie!"

"The paper trail was provided to me yesterday by the Swiss banking regulators who liquidated your brother's accounts," Ethan said, stepping right up to the iron bars. "In approximately five minutes, state troopers will pull up behind your town car with a warrant for your arrest."

Right on cue, the distant wail of police sirens began echoing up the mountain road.

Arthur Vance took a frantic step backward, looking down the driveway in pure, paralyzed horror.

"You ruined Vance," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with sudden rage. "You ruined Bianca... and now you're destroying our entire family!"

"No, Arthur," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the sound of the approaching sirens like a razor. "You destroyed yourselves the moment your family touched my children."

The police cruisers rounded the final bend of the mountain road, their red and blue lights flashing against the green pine trees.

Ethan turned his back on the iron gates, leaving Arthur Vance to face his fate, and walked slowly back up the stone driveway toward the laughter echoing from Clara's greenhouse.
