Chapter 9 - The Thanksgiving Feast

Five months later.

November brought the first gentle dusting of winter snow to the peaks of Aspen, but inside the Whitmore estate, the air was warm, smelling of roasted turkey, fresh pumpkin pie, cinnamon, and warm apple cider.

It was Thanksgiving evening.

The grand dining room—the very room where Ethan had found his starving daughters eleven months ago—had been completely redesigned.

The cold marble table was gone, replaced by a massive, hand-carved oak table made from local Colorado timber. Warm copper lamps hung from the ceiling, and a large stone fireplace roared with crackling birch logs.

Sitting around the table was a true family.

At the head sat Ethan. To his right sat Mrs. Gable, smiling warmly as she carved a massive roasted turkey. Beside her sat Gideon, wearing a comfortable sweater, laughing quietly with Dr. Evelyn Reed and Sarah Lin.

And grouped around Ethan were his four little girls.

Ava, Mia, Chloe, and Grace were dressed in matching dark-red velvet dresses with bright white lace collars. Their cheeks were round, healthy, and rosy from an afternoon spent playing in the snow. Their eyes shone with life, health, and absolute security.

"Alright, everyone," Ethan said, standing up and holding a glass of sparkling apple cider. "Before we eat, we follow the Whitmore tradition. Everyone has to say one thing they are thankful for."

Mia immediately raised her hand, jumping up on her chair. "Me first! Me first!"

Ethan laughed. "Go ahead, Mia."

"I am thankful for Mrs. Gable’s pumpkin pie!" Mia announced proudly, pointing a chubby finger at the dessert table. "And for my new red shoes!"

The table erupted into warm laughter.

"Ava?" Ethan looked at his eldest daughter.

Ava stood up neatly, adjusting her velvet dress. "I am thankful that our house is warm," she said softly, looking around the bright room. "And that Daddy never has to leave for New York again."

Ethan felt a deep, overwhelming warmth fill his chest. He looked at Grace.

Grace looked up, holding her small glass of cider with both hands. "I am thankful for Mommy Clara’s greenhouse," Grace whispered, a sweet, radiant smile breaking across her face. "Because the flowers grew up to see the sun."

Finally, Ethan looked at Chloe, who was sitting right beside him, leaning her head against his arm.

"Chloe?"

Chloe looked up into her father’s eyes—the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire to save her, who had stood in the cold night and brought her back to life.

"I am thankful for Daddy," Chloe said softly, her small hand reaching out to squeeze his finger. "Because he found us in the dark."

Tears welled in Ethan’s eyes—not tears of grief or rage, but tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

He raised his glass high above the grand oak table.

"To family," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "To the light that never goes out."

"To family!" the room echoed in unison.
