Chapter 5 - The Unholy Alliance

I didn't drive straight back to the safehouse. I knew Julian’s men might be tailing my SUV now. Instead, I drove to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport parking garage, left my SUV in a crowded lot, and slipped out the back entrance to meet Marcus in a pre-arranged rental car.

By noon, I was back at the cabin in Uwharrie.

Tessa was sitting at the wooden dining table, laptop open, her face illuminated by the blue light of the screen. Marcus stood beside her, examining the files we had extracted from the micro-SD card.

"It's all here, Ethan," Marcus said, looking up as I entered the room. "Bank routing numbers, offshore accounts, wire transfers to cartel associates, and encrypted audio files. This isn't just financial fraud. This is a federal RICO indictment."

Tessa looked up at me, her eyes filled with anxiety. "Did anyone follow you?"

"I shook them at the airport," I said, walking over to kiss the top of her head. "Julian was inside our house, Tess. He knows Miles saw you."

Tessa gasped, clutching her chest. "Oh God..."

"It's okay," I assured her. "I convinced him it was a mistake—that Miles just got confused by a stranger who looked like you. But we don't have much time. Once Vance realizes you're actually gone from downtown, he'll know I lied."

"Then we go to the authorities today," Tessa said firmly. "We take this drive to the FBI field office in Charlotte."

Marcus raised a hand, his expression grave. "It's not that simple, Tessa. Richard Vance isn't just a corporate CEO. His primary legal counsel is Thomas Blake—the former Deputy Director of the FBI's Southeast Region. Blake still has deep ties inside the bureau. If we walk through the front door of the Charlotte field office with this drive, Blake will know about it before the desk agent finishes filing the report."

"Then who do we trust?" I asked, frustration rising in my chest. "If the police are compromised and the FBI has Vance's friends on payroll, who enforces the law?"

Marcus smiled grimly, pulling a satellite phone from his pocket. "We don't go to the local authorities. We go to someone who has been hunting Vance’s cartel associates for five years without success."

"Who?"

"Special Agent Victoria Reyes," Marcus said. "U.S. Department of Justice, Organized Crime and Gang Section. She operates out of Washington D.C., completely outside the jurisdiction of North Carolina’s local field offices. And more importantly, her younger sister was murdered by the same syndicate Vance launders money for. She won't protect him. She'll destroy him."

Ten minutes later, Marcus had Agent Reyes on the secure line.

I listened as Tessa spoke to the agent, her voice steady and clear as she detailed the evidence, the torture facility, and the corporate money laundering. On the other end of the line, I could hear Reyes’ sudden, sharp intake of breath.

"Mrs. Whitford," Agent Reyes said, her voice echoing through the speakerphone, sharp and cold as steel. "If what you are telling me is true, you are holding the missing piece of the largest federal prosecution in North Carolina history. I can have a federal tactical team in Charlotte by tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow morning is too late, Agent Reyes," I spoke up, leaning over the phone. "Vance knows something is wrong. His head of security broke into my house today. By tomorrow, Vance will liquidate his assets and vanish to a non-extradition country."

There was a brief pause on the line.

"Then we hit him tonight," Reyes declared firmly. "I will fly into Charlotte on a private Justice Department transport within four hours. But to arrest Vance and Cross without giving their high-priced lawyers a chance to destroy evidence, we need to catch them red-handed at Vance Global headquarters."

Tessa looked at me, a sudden spark of terrifying realization in her eyes. "The secondary ledger... it auto-deletes from the main server every Sunday at midnight during the weekly system backup. That’s why Vance wanted the flash drive—it’s the only hard copy left!"

"Then midnight is our deadline," I said, looking around the room at Marcus, Tessa, and Sarah. "Tonight, Richard Vance’s empire falls."
