Chapter 6 - The Hornet's Nest

At 10:30 PM, the sky above Charlotte was heavy with dark, rain-swollen clouds.

Vance Global Logistics occupied a twenty-story glass skyscraper in the heart of Uptown Charlotte. At this hour, the surrounding financial district was quiet, its streets lit by the amber glow of streetlights reflecting off wet asphalt.

Agent Victoria Reyes met us in the back of an unmarked black command van parked three blocks from the building. She was a fierce, sharp-eyed woman in her late thirties with her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun, wearing a tactical Kevlar vest under a trench coat.

Beside her were four armed federal agents equipped with suppressed sidearms and tactical gear.

"Here's the situation," Agent Reyes said, displaying a digital blueprint of the skyscraper on a tablet screen. "Vance’s private security team controls the entire building. They have closed-circuit TV monitoring every hallway, biometric locks on the server rooms, and an armed squad on the top floor where Vance’s executive suite is located."

"Richard Vance is in the building?" I asked.

"Our surveillance confirms his car entered the underground garage twenty minutes ago," Reyes nodded. "Julian Cross is with him. They know something is wrong, Ethan. Vance’s financial managers have begun initiating high-volume offshore transfers."

"They're liquidating," Tessa said, her hands trembling slightly as she leaned over the blueprints. "They're getting ready to flee the country tonight!"

"We have enough evidence from your micro-SD card to execute an emergency federal search warrant," Reyes said. "But if we hit the front doors with sirens wailing, Vance will execute a hard-drive wipe protocol on the server room, destroying the real-time transfer logs that link him directly to the cartel leaders."

"Then we need someone inside to stop the wipe before you breach," Marcus said.

"I know the server room access codes," Tessa said firmly. "I worked with the network engineers when Vance installed the system. The override terminal is on the nineteenth floor."

"Absolutely not," I blurted out, stepping between Tessa and the agents. "Tessa, you are not going back into that building! You barely survived these monsters!"

Tessa took my hands, looking up at me with an intensity that silenced my protest. "Ethan, for three years I was a victim. I hid in ditches, I ate out of trash cans, and I cried myself to sleep on cold cardboard while my husband and son mourned me. I am done hiding. I am going to look Richard Vance in the eye and watch him lose everything."

I looked into her eyes—the gentle brown eyes that I loved, now filled with an unbreakable strength. I knew there was no stopping her.

"Then I'm going with you," I said.

Agent Reyes looked between us, then nodded slowly. "Marcus and my team will escort you through the loading dock entrance. We use the service elevator to reach the nineteenth floor. Once Tessa overrides the server wipe, I give the order for the federal strike team to breach the main lobby."

"What about Miles?" I asked, my heart aching for our son.

"He's safe with Sarah at a secure DOJ safehouse in Pineville," Reyes assured me. "He's guarded by three armed federal marshals. Focus on the mission, Ethan. Let's go bring your wife home for good."
