Chapter 7 - Into the Dark

The loading dock of Vance Global Logistics was dark, smelling of exhaust fumes, damp cardboard, and hydraulic oil.

Marcus led the way, his suppressed pistol raised as he moved silently past rows of parked delivery vans. Agent Reyes and two DOJ tactical officers followed closely behind, guarding Tessa and me.

Tessa led us to a heavy steel security door near the freight elevator. She entered an eight-digit bypass code on the electronic keypad. The light flickered from red to green with a soft click.

"The service elevator bypasses the main lobby security desk," Tessa whispered as we stepped inside the stainless-steel lift. "It goes straight to the nineteenth floor server annex."

Marcus pressed the button for floor 19. The elevator hummed to life, rising smoothly through the dark shaft of the skyscraper.

My heart hammered against my ribs with every floor marker that lit up on the digital display. 8... 9... 10...

"Remember," Reyes whispered, checking her weapon's action. "Once we hit floor 19, speed is everything. Tessa gets to the override terminal. I initiate the digital freeze order to the Federal Reserve to block Vance’s transfers. Then we secure Vance."

17... 18... 19.

The elevator chimed softly and the heavy doors slid open.

The nineteenth floor was dimly lit, silent save for the deep, vibrating hum of hundreds of server blades operating inside glass-walled rooms. Blue and green LED lights flickered across the dark hallway like digital fireflies.

"Clear," Marcus whispered, stepping out onto the carpeted floor.

Tessa moved quickly toward a corner office marked NETWORK ARCHITECTURE. She swiped a master keycard she had generated on Reyes' computer, and the door unlocked.

Inside, a massive bank of monitors displayed real-time server activity. A red progress bar on the center screen read: EMERGENCY SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED - 68% COMPLETE.

"They started the wipe!" Tessa gasped, dropping into the leather office chair and her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Vance triggered it remotely from his top-floor suite!"

"How long do you need?" Reyes asked, guarding the doorway.

"Ninety seconds," Tessa said, code reflecting in her eyes as she bypassed the encryption layers. "I'm setting up a local mirror loop. It will trick the purge protocol into writing over dummy files while preserving the actual transactional data."

"Hurry, Tess," I said, watching the hallway nervously through the glass window.

Suddenly, a loud emergency alarm began to blare throughout the entire building. Red strobe lights flashed in the hallway, casting terrifying crimson shadows across the walls.

"System breach detected!" an automated voice echoed from the ceiling speakers. "Security team respond to Floor 19!"

"They know we're here!" Marcus yelled. "Reyes, call in the breach!"

Agent Reyes pulled her radio to her collar. "All units, this is Reyes! Code Red! Breach the building now! I repeat, breach the building!"

Down in the street, the distant wail of dozens of police sirens shattered the night air. Flashbang grenades detonated in the main lobby three floors below, sending violent concussive rumbles shaking through the concrete floor beneath our feet.

"I've got it!" Tessa shouted, hitting the enter key with a triumphant slap. The red progress bar vanished, replaced by a bright green screen: DATA PURGE TERMINATED. ALL FILES SECURED & MIRRORED TO DOJ SERVERS.

"Yes!" I cheered, grabbing her shoulder.

Before we could celebrate, a heavy burst of automatic gunfire shattered the glass walls of the server office.
