Chapter 10 - A Crown Forged in Fire

The autumn rain tapped softly against the massive glass windows of the penthouse, washing away the last traces of dust from a past that no longer had any power over us.

Down below, the glittering lights of Chicago stretched out like a sea of diamonds against the dark canvas of Lake Michigan. The empire Marco ruled was vast, ruthless, and terrifying to the outside world, but inside these walls, it was simply home.

We sat together at the long mahogany dining table—a family forged in fire, betrayal, and an unbreakable will to survive.

Leo was busy arranging his toy blocks into the shape of a fortress, while Mila sat happily on Marco’s lap, babbling about the clouds outside as Marco listened with a patient, utterly devoted smile that the rest of the underworld would never, in a million years, have believed possible.

I poured myself a glass of sparkling water, walking over to stand beside the floor-to-ceiling window.

Marco looked up, catching my reflection in the glass. He gently set Mila down to play with her brother, stood up, and walked across the marble floor to stand right behind me. His strong arms slid around my waist, pulling me back against his chest, his warm breath stirring the hair at the nape of my neck.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Bellini," he murmured softly.

I leaned back into his embrace, resting my hands over his arms, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart against my spine.

"I was just thinking about the night I ran away," I said quietly. "If someone had told me then that I would come back stronger, that we would build all of this from the ashes... I wouldn't have believed them."

Marco rested his chin on my shoulder, his amber eyes reflecting the city lights outside.

"You were always stronger than you knew, Elena," he whispered fiercely. "That’s why I fell in love with you. And that’s why no force on earth—no cartel, no traitor, no lie—could ever keep us apart."

I turned within his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking up into the face of the man who had torn the world apart just to find his way back to me.

"We survived the storm, Marco," I whispered.

"We are the storm," he replied, and kissed me as the city lights burned brightly below us, eternal and unshakeable.
