Chapter 9 - The Return to Lake Shore Drive

Three weeks later, the private jet touched down on the tarmac of O'Hare International Airport under a brilliant autumn sky.

The wind off Lake Michigan was sharp and biting, carrying the unmistakable scent of the city I had fled in terror three years ago. But as I stepped down the metal staircase of the private jet, holding Mila’s hand while Marco carried a sleepy Leo on his broad shoulders, I didn't feel like a fugitive anymore.

Waiting at the base of the stairs was a row of sleek black town cars, flanked by a dozen of Marco’s most trusted security detail, led by Vance, who bowed his head respectfully as we approached.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Bellini," Vance said, opening the door of the lead vehicle.

"Thank you, Vance," I replied smoothly, sliding into the leather interior with the practiced grace of a woman who belonged at the very top of the world.

As the motorcade wound its way toward Lake Shore Drive, the familiar skyline of Chicago rose before us like a monument of glass and steel. The glittering towers, the sprawling parks, the roaring expressway—it was all just as I had left it.

Except now, the shadows had been cleared away.

When our car pulled up to the grand wrought-iron gates of our Lake Shore Drive penthouse, the doormen rushed forward, their eyes wide with shock and instant, absolute deference.

We rode the private elevator up in absolute silence. When the polished mahogany doors slid open into the penthouse, the sprawling marble foyer stretched out before us, bathed in the golden afternoon light pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

It was the exact spot where my life had shattered three years ago.

I walked over to the grand white leather sofa where Chloe had once sat as a puppet in a twisted corporate game. I ran my hand along the smooth surface, feeling no anger, no fear—only a profound, unshakeable sense of victory.

"Mama," Mila tugged at my skirt, looking around the palatial room with wide, sparkling eyes. "Is this our new castle?"

May you like

I knelt down, sweeping her up into my arms, while Marco set a yawning Leo down on the plush rug beside us.

"Yes, my love," I whispered, kissing the top of her dark curls as I looked up to meet Marco’s steady, amber gaze across the room. "This is our home."
