Chapter 4 - The Confession Tape

The screen flickered, illuminating the dark kitchen in a harsh, cold blue light.
The video opened with a familiar interior—the grand, floor-to-ceiling windows of our old Chicago penthouse overlooking Lake Shore Drive. The timestamp in the corner read the exact date, down to the minute, of the night I caught my husband in bed with my sister.
On screen, Chloe was pacing across the white marble floor, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Her hair was perfectly styled, her lips painted in a dangerous shade of crimson. She wasn't crying. She wasn't cowering. She was laughing—a sharp, triumphant sound that made my skin crawl.
Then, the camera angle shifted.
Marco stepped into the frame, but he looked... wrong. His posture was stiff, his eyes glazed over, staring blankly ahead as if he were sleepwalking. He was sitting rigidly on the edge of the leather sofa.
On the audio, a voice spoke—smooth, synthesized, and chillingly calm.
“Blink twice, Marco, if you understand the parameters of the contract.”
On screen, Marco’s eyelids fluttered twice.
“Good. When Elena walks through those double doors in exactly three minutes, you will maintain this exact posture. You will not speak. You will look at Chloe as if she is the only woman in the room. And you will let your wife walk out that door without saying a single word to stop her.”
My breath hitched in my throat. I dropped the phone onto the counter as if it had burst into flames. My entire body began to tremble.
Hypnosis. Or neuro-linguistic programming. Or some twisted, high-stakes psychological manipulation backed by pharmaceutical-grade compliance drugs.
I turned around slowly to face Marco. He was standing in the doorway of the kitchen, his head bowed, his jaw clenched so tightly muscle spasms flickered across his cheek.
"You didn't cheat on me," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.
Marco looked up, his amber eyes shining with unshed tears—a sight so foreign, so devastating, it broke something deep inside my chest.
"I would rather die than touch another woman, Elena," Marco said, his voice raw, stripped of all the arrogance and power that defined his underworld reign. "You were my life. You were my soul. The night you walked out of that penthouse, I didn't even realize what was happening until the drugs wore off and I found myself sitting alone in an empty bedroom with a glass of drugged scotch on the table."
"Why?" I choked out, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "Why would Chloe do that? How could she afford... who backed her?"
Marco stepped closer, stopping just a foot away from me, careful not to crowd me, treating me like a wounded animal he was desperate to protect.
"Chloe was never working alone, Elena," Marco said darkly. "She was a front. A puppet for a corporate syndicate that wanted my empire destroyed from the inside out. And when you fled with my unborn children, they realized they had a secondary leverage point. They've been hunting you for three years to use you against me. And today... they almost succeeded."
Before I could process the terrifying depth of the conspiracy surrounding us, the groaning man on our living room floor let out a sharp gasp.
"Boss," the man wheezed, blood pooling under his shoulder. "They're already here. The whole town... it's locked down."
Marco’s head snapped toward the front door. He pulled out his radio communicator, clicking the button with his thumb.

"Vance? Report."
Static hissed through the speaker, followed by the frantic voice of his chief of security. "Mr. Bellini! We've got multiple black SUVs blockading both ends of Route 11. Local police comms are jammed. They've cut the town off from the outside world. They're coming for the house!"
