Chapter 5 - Ambush in the Shadows

The sound of shattering metal echoed through the concrete basement. Sparks rained down as a hydraulic breaching frame slammed into the heavy steel door of Pathology Lab 4.

"Get behind the counter!" Evelyn screamed, grabbing Mason and Lily and shoving them under a heavy stainless steel workstation stacked with medical trays.

Dr. Mercer grabbed a shelf of chemical reagents, hurling a jar of concentrated acid at the door just as it burst wide open. Two men wearing dark black tactical suits, unbadged helmets, and suppressed automatic rifles poured into the room. The lead officer took the acid splash against his tactical vest, swearing loudly as he kicked Mercer viciously in the chest, sending the elderly doctor crashing into a wall of glass cabinets.

"Clear the room!" a voice boomed through a radio speaker mounted on the squad leader's chest. "Target Alpha is Evelyn Whitaker. Non-lethal force on the female executive! Secure the test subjects!"

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass microscope off the adjacent table and swung it with all her strength into the side of the second soldier's helmet. The impact cracked the visor, sending the man staggering backward into the hallway.

"Mason, run to the back exit!" Evelyn yelled, pulling a fire extinguisher from the wall and sweeping the nozzle. She slammed her hand onto the release lever, spraying a blinding wall of thick, white chemical foam directly into the faces of the tactical team.

The lab turned into a chaos of coughing, shouting, and blinding white powder. Mason grabbed Lily’s hand, his small face set with fiery determination. "This way! I see the laundry chute!"

"Evelyn! Take the drive!" Dr. Mercer gasped from the floor, his face covered in blood. He reached up and shoved a small, silver flash drive into Evelyn’s hand. "It has the raw blood sequence data... and the list of political sponsors! Go! Don't let Vance win!"

"Julian, come with us!" Evelyn cried out, trying to drag him up.

"I'm done, Evelyn!" Mercer wheezed, holding a heavy iron bar against the door frame to block the secondary squad. "Save those children!"

Evelyn made the hardest decision of her life. She turned, grabbing Mason and Lily, and sprinted through the narrow rear service hallway toward the underground loading dock.

Behind them, the sound of suppressed gunfire echoed through the tiled corridors, followed by a terrifying, hollow silence.

Evelyn, Mason, and Lily burst through the heavy fire exit doors into the subterranean parking garage. The dark Volvo was waiting, Paul standing outside with a heavy iron tire iron in his hand, his eyes wide with adrenaline.

"They breached the main gate, Ms. Whitaker!" Paul yelled, opening the heavy rear door. "There are three black SUVs coming down the ramp!"

"Get us out of here, Paul! Drive through them!" Evelyn shouted, hauling the kids inside and leaping into the passenger seat.

The Volvo’s engine screamed as Paul slammed the pedal to the floor. The heavy vehicle rocketed up the spiral exit ramp. At the crest of the ramp, a heavy black SUV swung around to block the concrete exit.

"Hold on!" Paul roared.

The armored Volvo smashed directly into the front quarter-panel of the interceptor vehicle. The sound of tearing metal and shattering safety glass filled the air as the force of the collision threw the black SUV into a concrete pillar. The Volvo broke free, bursting out of the dark garage and swerving into the blinding sunlight of the Chicago afternoon street.

Inside the back seat, Mason was holding Lily close, shielding her head with his own body. He looked up at Evelyn, his chest heaving, his face covered in dust and sweat.

"They killed him, didn't they?" Mason whispered.

Evelyn looked back at the boy, her heart breaking, her eyes burning with tears she refused to let fall. "They think they won, Mason. But Dr. Mercer gave us the key to tear their entire empire to the ground."

She looked at the silver flash drive in her hand. On the side was engraved a single name that made her blood run cold: PROJECT LAZARUS - VANCE.
