Chapter 9 - The Trial of Shadows

With a single click of Evelyn’s thumb, the giant LED screens flashed to life.
The room erupted into collective, gasping terror as high-definition video of the Aegis underground facility filled the venue. The screens displayed the cold, sterile rooms, the rows of stainless steel beds, and the explicit medical charts showing the bio-nanite extractions performed on stolen homeless children.
Then, the audio track of Grant Whitaker’s voice echoed through the venue’s thousand-watt speaker array:
"The blood protein extractions from the young donors are fully stabilizing the neural pathways... But we need a continuous supply of young, untraceable subjects..."
The crowd went completely wild. Society women shrieked, corporate donors backed away from the stage in horror, and several news camera crews instantly pivoted their lenses from the podium to the massive screens, broadcasting the live feed across national television networks.
"It's a fake! It's an AI deepfake!" Governor Vance screamed into his microphone, his face contorting into a violent, panicked mask. "Guards, terminate her!"
Two of Vance’s personal private security contractors drew suppressed handguns and aimed them toward the upper balcony.
CRASH!
The glass skylights above the main stage shattered in a cascade of glittering fragments. Three tactical operatives from Evelyn’s private team rappelled down on heavy steel cables, firing non-lethal stun grenades onto the stage. The blinding white flashes and deafening sound waves sent the armed security guards crashing to the floor.
Grant turned to flee through the rear stage exit, but Evelyn was already there. She descended the rear stairwell with predatory speed, cutting off his escape route in the dimly lit backstage hallway.
"Evelyn, please!" Grant sobbed, dropping to his knees, his hands raised in terror as Paul and Marcus stepped up behind her. "They forced me! Vance forced me! He threatened to destroy the company!"
"You sacrificed Clara!" Evelyn screamed, her eyes blazing with raw, unadulterated fury as she stepped up to her brother. "You took our sister and turned her into a laboratory experiment! You marked those children like cattle!"
"She was already dying!" Grant wept hysterically. "Her brain was degrading! I tried to save her, Evelyn! The technology wasn't ready for her, but it worked for Vance! We were going to make billions! We were going to cure every disease in the world!"
"You didn't cure anything," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a cold, terrifying whisper. "You just built a slaughterhouse."
Before Grant could respond, Evelyn’s comms earpiece chimed.
"Ms. Evelyn!" Mason’s voice cracked through the static, sound of cheering and children’s laughter in the background. "We got them! All twelve kids are out of the brewery! We're on the buses with Team Alpha! We're safe!"
A tear finally spilled over Evelyn’s lash and traced down her cheek, cutting through the dust on her face.
"Thank you, Mason," she whispered into the mic.
She looked down at Grant, who was cowering on the wet floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
Out in the main hall, the heavy metallic footsteps of the FBI Tactical Response Team echoed through the shattered entrances. Federal agents streamed into the building, guns raised, shouting orders.
"Grant Whitaker! Governor William Vance!" an FBI commander’s voice boomed through a megaphone. "You are under federal arrest for human trafficking, illegal biological experimentation, and high treason!"
Evelyn stepped back, standing tall and proud as the federal agents swarmed the stage, placing heavy steel handcuffs on Grant and Governor Vance, dragging them out into the blinding light of a hundred media cameras.

As Grant was shoved past her, he looked at Evelyn with hollow, terrified eyes. "Evelyn... what are you going to do now?"
Evelyn looked him straight in the eye, her posture unyielding. "I'm going to rebuild everything you destroyed."
