Chapter 8 - Operation Blackout

The night of the Governor’s Gala arrived under a torrential downpour. Thunder rumbled across Lake Michigan, shaking the glass walls of the massive Crystal Gardens structure at Navy Pier. Inside, the venue was a glittering oasis of tuxedoes, evening gowns, champagne towers, and flashbulbs.
Governor William Vance stood on the main stage, looking vibrant, healthy, and decades younger than his true age. Standing beside him, smiling broadly for the camera flashes, was Grant Whitaker.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Governor Vance spoke into the podium microphone, his voice booming through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Tonight, as we gather to raise funds for the Midwest Youth Foundation, we celebrate not just prosperity, but the triumph of medical innovation and hope..."
Outside the pier, tucked inside an unmarked communications van, Evelyn sat in front of six glowing monitors, wearing a slick black tactical jumpsuit. Beside her, a former Special Forces operator named Marcus—who had served as her father’s personal bodyguard for twenty years—checked his earpiece.
"Team Alpha is in position at the South Chicago Brewery," Marcus reported quietly. "Mason is leading them through the underground storm drain access. They've bypassed the outer perimeter motion sensors."
Evelyn watched a tiny GPS dot moving through a blueprint of the brewery facility on her left monitor. "Mason, do you copy?" she spoke into her headset.
"I copy, Ms. Evelyn," Mason’s young voice came through the comms line, crisp and clear. "We just passed the boiler room. The heavy security door is right ahead. The guards are changing shifts now."
"Be careful, Mason," Evelyn said, her heart in her throat. "Marcus, order Team Alpha to breach the moment Mason confirms the children are secured."
"Roger that," Marcus said. "Evelyn, you have three minutes before the Governor concludes his opening remarks. Are you sure you want to do this alone?"
Evelyn picked up an encrypted digital broadcast tap—a specialized device designed to hijack high-frequency television and event feeds—and slipped it into her pocket.
"I am not alone," Evelyn said quietly, looking at a photo of her sister Clara tucked inside her collar. "I have seven years of justice behind me."
Evelyn stepped out of the van into the pouring rain. Slipping past the outer security perimeter using a high-level executive security pass that Grant had forgotten to revoke, she slipped through the service corridors of Navy Pier, avoiding the private security guards posted at every turn.
Inside the main ballroom, Governor Vance was warming up to his climax. "And so, as we look to the future, as we build a safer, healthier Illinois—"
Suddenly, the massive overhead crystal chandeliers flickered wildly and plunged into complete and utter darkness.
Gasps and shocked screams echoed through the crowd of hundreds of wealthy donors. Emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim, eerie red glow across the vast glass pavilion.
"Security! Check the generators!" Grant shouted into his lapel microphone, his face showing the first signs of genuine panic.
"Don't bother, Grant," a voice echoed through the massive auditorium sound system, amplified to a deafening volume.
Every head in the room turned toward the grand balcony overlooking the main stage.
Standing at the railing, illuminated by the beam of a single tactical spotlight, was Evelyn Whitaker. She held a microphone in one hand and a remote broadcast trigger in the other.
"Evelyn!" Grant gasped, stepping back, his face draining of all color. "Security! Shoot her! Arrest her!"
"Touch a weapon, and every file on the Aegis dark server goes live to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and forty global news networks simultaneously," Evelyn’s voice boomed across the silent room.

She pointed the remote at the giant fifty-foot LED projection screens behind the main stage.
"Tonight, Governor Vance," Evelyn declared, her voice ringing with absolute authority, "the people of Chicago are going to see exactly what kind of medicine brought you back from the dead."
