Chapter 3 - The Depths of Desperation

Three weeks passed. Noah was growing stronger every day, gaining weight and slowly transitioning out of the intensive care unit. His medical team was amazed by his resilience, but to me, he was simply a fighter, just like his mother.
Meanwhile, Ethan’s world was tearing itself apart. Locked inside the Manhattan Correctional Facility, denied bail, and stripped of his corporate titles, his swagger had entirely evaporated. Bianca, facing severe criminal penalties, had hired her own aggressive legal defense team whose first strategy was to pin all responsibility on Ethan. Her lawyers claimed that Ethan had emotionally abused her, manipulated her into confronting me in the hospital garage, and instructed her to “silence” me so the baby wouldn’t disrupt their upcoming nuptials.
They were turning on each other like wild animals in a cage.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Arthur walked into my hospital room with a legal notice. “Ethan’s criminal defense attorney has requested a plea bargain. They want a sit-down with you.”
“Why me?” I asked, adjusting the blanket around Noah. “I’m not the prosecutor.”
“Because the prosecutor won’t move without your consent,” Arthur explained. “The DA considers Noah a victim of attempted manslaughter given the placental abruption caused by the attack. Ethan knows that if Bianca’s testimony links him to inciting the assault, he could face up to fifteen years as an accomplice. He wants you to drop the civil suits and sign an affidavit stating he had no knowledge of Bianca’s actions.”
I looked out the window at the rain sweeping over the city skyline. “Set up the meeting. But tell them he comes to me. I’m not stepping foot in a courthouse while my son is still in the hospital.”
Two days later, Ethan was escorted into a private meeting room at the hospital under heavy guard, wearing handcuffs and leg irons. His tailored designer suit was replaced by a ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. He had lost weight, his hair was unkempt, and the arrogant glint in his eyes had been replaced by dark circles of exhaustion and terror.
He sat down across from me, the metal chains clinking loudly against the wooden table.
“Claire,” he rasped, his voice trembling. “Look at me. Please.”
“I’m looking,” I replied coldly, keeping my hands folded on the table.
“I didn’t know Bianca was going to do that,” he begged, tears welling in his eyes. “I swear to God, Claire, I didn’t know she went to the hospital that day! She told me she was going to get her nails done for the wedding! I didn’t want you hurt. I didn’t want our baby hurt!”
“Our baby?” I let out a soft, bitter laugh. “Ethan, when I told you I was pregnant five months ago, do you remember what you said to me?”
He closed his eyes, fresh sweat breaking out on his forehead.
“You threw a stack of divorce papers at my face and told me that if I tried to use a fake pregnancy to trap you into staying, you would ruin me financially,” I reminded him, my voice dripping with icy recollection. “You changed the locks on our home that very night. You canceled my health insurance three weeks later. You left me to pay for my prenatal care out of a savings account you didn't know I had.”
“I was stupid! I was angry! Bianca was manipulating me!” Ethan sobbed, leaning forward as far as the chains would allow. “She told me you were cheating on me! She convinced me the baby wasn't mine!”
“Bianca didn’t forge my signature on the pension funds, Ethan,” I said, leaning in close so he could hear every syllable. “Bianca didn’t transfer $14 million into private shell companies in Belize. You did that all on your own long before Bianca ever entered the picture.”
Ethan’s face went hollow. “What do you want from me, Claire? What is it going to take for you to stop this? They’re talking about sending me to state prison. Do you have any idea what will happen to me in there?”
“I want what was always mine,” I stated firmly. “You will sign over every remaining personal asset, including the penthouse, the estate in the Hamptons, and your remaining shares in Cole Dynamics. You will surrender all parental rights to Noah, completely and permanently. You will never see him, you will never speak his name, and you will never exist to him.”
Ethan stared at me in absolute shock. “Surrender my rights? He’s my son! He’s a Cole!”
May you like
“He is a Bennett,” I corrected him. “And if you refuse, Arthur will hand the federal prosecutors the complete set of encrypted servers proving you committed bank fraud across four international jurisdictions. That isn't five years in state prison, Ethan. That’s twenty-five years in federal penitentiary.”
Ethan slumped back in his chair, the crushing weight of his choices finally breaking him completely. He covered his face with his trembling, handcuffed hands and wept.
