Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two months passed. The storm of scandals that had rocked Cole Dynamics began to settle into a new reality. Under my leadership, the company’s stock rebounded and reached an all-time high. The toxic, frat-boy corporate culture Ethan had cultivated was systematically dismantled and replaced with transparency, accountability, and real technological innovation.
Noah was finally discharged from the hospital. Bringing him home to my new apartment—a light-filled penthouse overlooking Central Park, bought entirely with my own hard-earned assets—was the happiest moment of my life. The nursery was painted a soft sage green, filled with gentle light and the sound of soft lullabies.
However, peace in the public eye did not mean the danger had entirely vanished.
One evening, while setting Noah down in his crib, my private cell phone rang. It was an unlisted number. I hesitated before answering.
“Claire?”
The voice was shaky, quiet, and terrified. It was Bianca.
“How did you get this number, Bianca?” I asked, my tone instantly dropping into warning territory. “You’re violating your bail conditions just by calling me.”
“Please, don’t hang up!” Bianca sobbed into the phone. “I’m calling from my lawyer’s office. Claire, you need to listen to me. Ethan isn’t done. He’s crazy!”
“Ethan is in a maximum-security remand facility waiting for trial,” I stated calmly. “He can’t do anything.”
“You don’t understand!” Bianca stammered, her breath coming in rapid gasps. “Before he was arrested, Ethan set up a contingency plan. He hired a team of private investigators to follow you! He paid them out of a secret crypto wallet that your audit missed! He gave them instructions that if he ever went to prison, they were to leak private, fabricated medical records about Noah’s birth to destroy your parental rights permanently through an untraceable public leak!”
I narrowed my eyes. “Why are you telling me this, Bianca? You were the one who pushed me.”
“Because he set me up too!” Bianca wailed. “His lawyers are placing all the criminal blame for the assault on me! They found a fake voice note that Ethan recorded making it sound like I planned to attack you alone! He used me, Claire! He’s going to let me go to prison for twenty years while he tries to cut a deal! I will tell the prosecutor everything about his secret accounts—I’ll plead guilty to assault—if you just help my lawyer get the attempted murder charges reduced!”
I stood silently in the quiet nursery, looking down at Noah’s tiny, sleeping face. Ethan’s arrogance truly knew no bounds. Even behind bars, he was still trying to manipulate the pieces on the board, using secret accounts and private operatives to try and tear my child away from me.
“Send every piece of evidence you have regarding his secret crypto accounts to Arthur Sterling,” I instructed Bianca cold-headedly. “If the evidence is real, my legal team will present it to the District Attorney. If you’re lying to me, Bianca, I will personally ensure the judge gives you the maximum sentence allowed by law.”
“It’s real! I’m sending it right now!” she pleaded before hanging up.
Ten minutes later, my computer chimes echoed through the study. Files began downloading—transaction logs, encrypted keys, and audio files recorded in Ethan’s office months prior.
As I listened to one of the audio recordings, Ethan’s familiar voice filled the quiet room:
“If Claire ever figures out the pension transfers, we crush her. We make her look like she’s lost her mind post-divorce. No judge will take the word of an unstable, bitter ex-wife over a CEO.”

I leaned back in my chair, a cold, quiet anger washing over me. Ethan hadn't just made mistakes; he had meticulously planned my destruction long before I ever found out about Bianca.
He thought he was playing chess. But he had forgotten who carved the board.
