Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Castle

Clara kept the encounter to herself all through Sunday dinner, but she couldn't stop watching Victor. He was laughing, helping Theo cut his chicken, but she noticed the faint shadow of exhaustion under his eyes.

After the kids had gone to bed, Clara found Victor in his study. The room, once a dark fortress of isolation, was now decorated with Mason’s drawings and Lily’s clay sculptures. Victor was staring out the window into the snowy night, a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand.

"Victor?" she called softly, walking in and wrapping her arms around his waist from behind.

He immediately relaxed into her touch, turning around to kiss her forehead. "Hey. You should be asleep. You have an early morning at the bakery."

"Victor, who is Julian Thorne?"

The air in the room instantly grew cold. Victor’s entire body went rigid. "Where did you hear that name?"

"He came to the bakery on Friday. He said... he said your father owed debts. He said the foundation of this family is on quicksand. Victor, please don't shut me out. We swore we wouldn't do that anymore."

Victor closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. He set his glass down on the desk and pulled her into his lap as he sat in the large leather chair.

"My father was not a good businessman, Clara. In his final years, before he died, he became desperate to expand the Hale shipping empire. He took loans. Not from banks, but from men like Julian Thorne. Shadow syndicates that operate in the dark corners of the corporate world."

"How much does he want?" Clara whispered.

"It’s not just about money," Victor said, his jaw clenching. "Thorne wants the Hale Shipping port contracts. If I give them to him, he will use our ships to smuggle illicit goods. It would destroy everything my family has built, and if we get caught, I will go to prison. But if I don't give them to him... he threatens to take this house, the land, and expose 'secrets' about my father that would ruin our name and leave us destitute."

Clara gripped Victor’s hands tightly. "Let them take the money. Let them take the name. We have each other, Victor."

"It's not that simple," Victor muttered, looking at the door where their children slept. "Thorne doesn't just want assets. He wants to break us. He knows the children are my weakness. Especially Mason and Lily."
