Chapter 8 - The Return of the Ghost

The preparations for the wedding were supposed to be peaceful, but the world of Victor Hale was never entirely quiet. Three weeks before the ceremony, a sleek black envelope was delivered to the mansion’s gate.
Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment paper, written in a elegant, shaky handwriting:
“A empire built on stolen ledgers cannot stand. I am coming for what is mine. – M.V.”
Marcus Vance had escaped from federal custody during a medical transport transfer.
The news sent a shockwave through the mansion. The security detail was doubled immediately. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day, and the children were no longer allowed to play in the yard without supervision.
Clara felt the old panic rising, but she refused to let it control her. She was standing in the kitchen, kneading a fresh batch of sourdough, when Victor walked in, his face tight with worry.
"He’s desperate, Clara," Victor said, his voice tense. "Vance has nothing left to lose. His assets are gone, his sister has fled the country, and he’s a wanted fugitive. A man with nothing to lose is the most dangerous creature alive."
"He’s a coward, Victor," Clara said, her voice steady as she punched the dough. "Cowards attack from the shadows because they’re afraid of the light. We aren't going to hide in the dark. We are going to have our wedding, in our garden, and we are going to show him that he cannot break us."
Victor looked at her, his eyes softening with deep admiration. He walked over, wrapping his arms around her waist, ignoring the flour that rubbed off on his expensive suit.

"You are stronger than anyone I have ever met, Clara Bennett," he whispered.
"I’m a mother, Victor," she said, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "We don't run from ghosts. We bury them."
