Chapter 4 - Trap in the Dark

"Run!" Marcus screamed.
Marcus fired two shots toward Julian’s armed thugs, the loud pops echoing violently in the enclosed concrete basement. Sparks flew off the steel beams as Julian’s men dove for cover, returning fire.
"Go! Out the back emergency chute!" Marcus yelled, pushing Eleanor and Lucy toward a narrow metal door behind the archives.
Lucy grabbed Eleanor’s arm, pulling the older woman through the door just as a bullet slammed into the drywall beside them. Marcus slammed the heavy steel door shut and turned the locking wheel from the inside, barricading them temporarily.
"This way! Hurry!" Lucy urged, her survival instincts kicking in. Years of navigating dangerous alleys and abandoned buildings had made her fast and agile in dark, confined spaces.
They rushed up a narrow spiral staircase that led to the old operating rooms on the third floor. The sound of heavy pounding reverberated from below—Julian’s men were using a sledgehammer to break through the archive door.
"They’ll be through in minutes," Marcus warned, checking his weapon's magazine. "I have four rounds left. Mrs. Whitmore, you and Lucy need to get to the roof. There’s a fire escape on the north side that leads down to an alley behind the boiler house."
"I'm not leaving you, Marcus," Eleanor insisted, her breathing heavy as they reached the top of the stairs.
"You have to, ma'am," Marcus said firmly. "You just found your daughter. You need to save her. Go!"
Marcus took up a defensive position at the stairwell entrance. Lucy took Eleanor’s arm, supporting her weight as they navigated the dark, decaying hallway of the third floor.
"Lucy... I'm so sorry," Eleanor sobbed softly as they hurried through the shadows. "I failed you. I failed to protect you when you were a baby, and now I’ve brought you into a nightmare."
"No," Lucy said firmly, stopping for a brief second to look directly into Eleanor’s eyes. "You saved my life today at that restaurant. You gave me hope when I had none left. We are getting out of here together."
Suddenly, the floor beneath them gave way with a deafening CRACK!
"Lucy!" Eleanor shrieked.
A section of rusted iron floor grating collapsed under Lucy’s feet. She gasped as she plummeted downward, her hands wildly clutching at air until her fingers caught the edge of a jagged steel beam.
She hung suspended twenty feet above the concrete basement floor, her legs dangling in empty air. Her fingers were slipping against the cold, greasy metal.
"Lucy! Hold on!" Eleanor dropped to her knees at the edge of the jagged hole, reaching down as far as she could. "Give me your hand!"
"I... I can't reach!" Lucy cried out, her energy rapidly draining. Her fingers were raw, bleeding from the rough steel.
Below her, in the shadows of the lower level, she could hear footsteps approaching.
"She’s up here!" a voice shouted from the darkness below. One of Julian’s thugs had bypassed Marcus and made it into the lower corridor!
"Lucy, take my hand! Trust me!" Eleanor pleaded, stretching her torso over the dangerous drop, her silver hair spilling forward. "I lost you once! I will never let you go again!"
Lucy looked up into the desperate, loving eyes of the woman she had asked for leftovers just hours ago. Gathering every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body, Lucy kicked her leg against a wall stud, swung her body upward, and reached out.
Their hands locked together.
With a surge of strength powered by motherly instinct, Eleanor pulled with all her might, gritting her teeth as she dragged Lucy up over the lip of the broken floor.

They collapsed together onto the safety of the corridor floor, panting for breath, holding each other tight as gunfire echoed from the stairwell behind them.
"We have to go," Lucy whispered, pulling Eleanor up. "The roof. Now!"
