Chapter 5 - Betrayal at the Top

They burst through the heavy roof door into the freezing Boston evening. Snow had begun to fall, fine white flakes swirling through the bitter winter air.

The skyline of the city glittered in the distance, but on the isolated roof of St. Jude’s, everything felt cold, dark, and dangerous.

They rushed toward the metal fire escape on the north edge of the roof, but as they reached the perimeter wall, a figure stepped out from behind a giant HVAC unit.

It was Julian.

He was breathing heavily, his suit jacket ruined, holding his silenced pistol pointed directly at Eleanor’s chest.

"Did you really think you could outrun me in my own building?" Julian sneered, stepping closer. Snowflakes melted on the hot barrel of his gun.

"Julian, stop this insanity!" Eleanor shouted, standing in front of Lucy defensively. "The police know we’re here. Marcus called them!"

"Marcus’s phone was jammed the moment you entered the property," Julian sneered, taking a deliberate step forward. "No one is coming, Eleanor. It’s just us."

"Why?" Lucy asked, stepping out from behind Eleanor, her eyes burning with defiance. "Why steal a baby? Why ruin a family?"

Julian laughed bitterly. "Because my father spent his whole life living in Arthur’s shadow! Arthur got the glory, Arthur got the wealth, and my father got scraps! When Arthur died, I was supposed to take over. But then Eleanor kept holding onto the throne, waiting for a miracle, refusing to let me take full control!"

Julian pointed the gun at Lucy’s head. "And then you show up. The ghost of Clara Whitmore. If the board finds out you’re alive, my voting shares become worthless. Everything I worked for—everything I stole—disappears."

"You won't get away with this," Eleanor said coldly. "I recorded our entire conversation in the basement."

Julian froze. "What?"

Eleanor slowly reached into her suit pocket and pulled out a small, sleek digital dictaphone—a standard device she used for executive meetings. Red light glowed on the display panel: RECORDING... 01:14:22.

"It’s connected directly to the Whitmore corporate Cloud server via satellite mobile link," Eleanor revealed, a fierce smile playing on her lips. "Every word you said—about Dr. Vance, about the bribe, about murdering us—has already been uploaded to the executive board’s secure server and my legal counsel."

Julian’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage. "You bitch!"

He raised the gun to shoot Eleanor.

"NO!" Lucy screamed.

Lucy tackled Julian with all her weight. The sudden impact knocked Julian off balance on the slick, snow-covered roof.

POP!

The gun discharged, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly off a brick chimney.

Julian and Lucy crashed onto the snowy roof deck. Julian growled, kicking Lucy away and scrambling toward his dropped gun.

Lucy lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s leg, but he kicked her hard in the shoulder, knocking her backward. He snatched the gun from the snow, spun around, and leveled it at Lucy’s face.

"Goodbye, cousin," Julian hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

BANG!

A deafening roar shattered the winter night.

Julian’s eyes widened in disbelief. A dark spot bloomed on his shoulder, and he dropped the pistol, collapsing onto his knees with a groan of pain.

Behind him stood Marcus, bleeding from a cut on his forehead, holding his service weapon with steady hands.

"Drop your weapon!" Marcus yelled.

From down below, the sirens finally broke through the night. Red and blue police lights illuminated the snow-covered facade of St. Jude’s Hospital.

Julian collapsed into the slush, cursing wildly as Marcus rushed forward to disarm him and pin him to the roof deck.

Eleanor dropped to her knees beside Lucy, gathering her daughter into her arms. "Lucy! Clara! Are you hurt?"

May you like

Lucy looked up at the night sky, feeling the cold snowflakes melting against her warm cheeks, and for the first time in twenty-two years, she felt completely safe.

"I'm okay," Lucy whispered, burying her face in Eleanor’s shoulder. "I'm okay, Mom."
