Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Past

Three months passed.

Spring arrived in Boston, turning the dreary winter streets into vibrant displays of blooming tulips and green leaves.

Lucy sat in a massive, sunlit office on the top floor of the Whitmore Tower. A wooden nameplate sat on her mahogany desk: CLARA WHITMORE - DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

She was studying blueprint designs for the first Clara Harper Foundation shelter—a multi-story complex featuring private rooms, a commercial training kitchen, and a full medical clinic.

A soft knock came at the door.

Eleanor stepped inside, holding two cups of steaming coffee. "Hard at work, Clara?"

Lucy smiled, looking up from her desk. She was still getting used to being called 'Clara,' but every time Eleanor said it, a warmth blossomed in her chest.

"Just reviewing the final contractor bids for the shelter," Clara replied, taking a coffee cup from Eleanor. "I want to make sure the kitchen facilities are top-tier. I want the residents to eat real, nutritious meals—not just scraps."

"They will," Eleanor said softly, seating herself in the leather chair across from her daughter. "Thanks to you."

Eleanor took a small envelope from her jacket pocket and placed it on the desk. "This arrived from the District Attorney’s office today. Julian took a plea deal this morning. He was sentenced to thirty years without the possibility of parole."

Clara looked at the envelope, feeling a quiet sense of closure wash over her. "And the St. Jude property?"

"The demolition permit was officially canceled," Eleanor smiled. "We are converting the old hospital building into the central office of the Foundation. Where your life was stolen, thousands of other lives will be saved."

Clara stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city. She remembered looking up at these very towers from cold park benches, feeling small, forgotten, and worthless.

"Mom?" Clara asked softly.

Eleanor walked over, standing beside her. "Yes, darling?"

"Do you ever think about what would have happened if I hadn't stepped into Bellamy's that day?"

Eleanor wrapped her arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her close. "I think about it every single day. And it taught me that there are no coincidences in this world. Fate brought you to my table, Clara. You asked for leftovers, but you gave me back my entire life."
