Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3: THE BLOODLINE OF SHADOWS

Mariana felt the room tilt beneath her feet.
"Mateo?" she whispered, her hands gripping the edge of the desk so tightly her nails turned white. "Your... your dead brother?"
"Yes," Alejandro said quietly. "When Mateo realized what Ernesto’s team was doing to the pregnant patients, he panicked. He knew he couldn't stop the trial without exposing the family to a massive federal investigation that would destroy everything. So he secretly altered the medical records, replaced the trial sample assigned to your file with his own healthy genetic material, and ensured that you received proper care."
He turned another page in the binder, revealing a handwritten letter on personalized stationery.
"Two weeks after Lucía was born," Alejandro continued, "Mateo came to my office. He was terrified. He told me he had done something reckless—that he had fathered a child with a patient at Santa Maria to protect her from Ernesto's experiments. He gave me this binder, the silver key, and the hospital bracelet. He made me swear that if anything ever happened to him, I would find the child and protect her."
Tears streamed down Mariana’s cheeks. She remembered the young man with soft eyes and untamed brown hair who used to walk through the clinic hallways in a white lab coat, always asking the mothers if they needed extra blankets or fresh water. She had thought he was just a kind volunteer doctor. She had never known his name.
"And then he died," Mariana said, her voice trembling.
"Three days later," Alejandro confirmed, his jaw tightening. "Mateo’s car went off the mountain road near Toluca. The police called it an accident—faulty brakes during a rainstorm. But I knew better. Mateo was going to the District Attorney's office that morning."
Alejandro looked at Lucía, who was currently sitting on a leather footstool nearby, quietly drawing with a pen on the back of a blank notepad, completely unbothered by the adult conversation.
"For four years," Alejandro confessed, his voice breaking, "I looked for you, Mariana. But when Mateo died, Ernesto wiped the Santa Maria patient database to cover his tracks. The clinic was shut down, the records burned. All I had was your name—Mariana Ríos—and a vague address in Ecatepec that led to an abandoned apartment building."
"I moved after the baby was born," Mariana murmured, remembering the crushing poverty that had forced her to jump from one rented room to another. "I had no money. I took whatever cleaning jobs I could find."
"And then three months ago," Alejandro said, a faint, melancholic smile appearing on his face, "you applied through a domestic staffing agency. When I saw your name on the employment roster, I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a cruel joke. But then you brought Lucía into this house... and the moment I saw her eyes, I knew. She has Mateo’s eyes, Mariana. She has my mother’s smile."
Mariana stepped back, processing the overwhelming truth. The billionaire she had worked for—the man who lived in cold isolation, surrounded by stone fountains and armored cars—was her daughter’s uncle. The uncle who had been searching for them for four long years.
"Why didn't you tell me the moment we walked through the door?" Mariana asked, her voice laced with anger and confusion. "Why test me? Why treat me like a potential thief?"
Alejandro hung his head, the guilt on his face stark and agonizing.
"Because I didn't know if Ernesto had sent you," Alejandro admitted softly. "Ernesto has been trying to force me out of the company for years. He knew Mateo had a child before he died. If Ernesto found Lucía first, she wouldn't just be a niece to him—she would be a threat to his control of the family trust. I had to be absolute certain you were not working for my uncle before I brought you into the circle of truth."
Mariana looked at Alejandro—really looked at him. She saw the heavy burdens he carried, the constant fear of betrayal that had locked him inside his own golden cage, and the profound love he carried for his deceased brother.

"I don't care about your money, Alejandro," Mariana said, her tone steadying. "I don't care about your companies or your family trust. All I care about is keeping my daughter safe."
"And that is why we have to fight together," Alejandro said, stepping around the desk and standing before her. "Because Ernesto knows she’s here now. And he will stop at nothing to eliminate the last living proof of Mateo’s bloodline."
