Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 9: A NEW PAINTING

Six months later.

The dark, cold atmosphere that had once defined the mansion in Las Lomas had vanished entirely.

The tall iron gates were open to the warm afternoon sun. The vast stone fountains played melody against the quiet air, and the gardens were filled with bright blooming roses, sunflowers, and vibrant bougainvillea.

The interior of the mansion was no longer a cold hotel for a lonely billionaire.

Children's toys were neatly arranged near the living room sofa. Colorful watercolor paintings—mostly depiction of bright yellow butterflies, green trees, and a three-legged rabbit named Panquecito—were framed in elegant gold and hung proudly on the high marble walls alongside masterworks worth millions of dollars.

In the spacious garden patio, a large white wooden table was set for a family celebration.

Mariana stood near the garden path, wearing a stunning floral summer dress, her dark hair flowing softly over her shoulders. She looked radiant, happy, and completely at peace.

She watched as Alejandro—wearing casual linen clothes, his dark hair messy from play—chased four-year-old Lucía across the green grass. Lucía’s melodic laughter echoed across the estate, her bright yellow dress catching the sunlight as she ran toward her uncle.

"I caught you!" Alejandro laughed, scooping Lucía up into his arms and spinning her around until she squealed with joy.

"Uncle Ale! Higher! Higher!" Lucía cheered, holding her little hands up to the sky.

Alejandro set her down gently on the grass, where she immediately ran toward a wooden easel set up under the shade of a large oak tree, grabbing her watercolors.

Alejandro walked over to Mariana, stepping up behind her and wrapping his arms comfortably around her waist, resting his chin lightly against her shoulder.

"How does the future President of the Santillán Foundation look today?" Alejandro whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek softly.

Mariana smiled, leaning back against his chest, placing her hands over his. "She looks like she’s about to paint your white shirt with red paint."

Alejandro chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that filled Mariana’s heart with complete warmth. "Let her paint it. Red goes well with yellow."

Over the past six months, the Santillán Group had undergone a complete transformation. Under Alejandro’s leadership and Mariana’s guidance as the newly appointed head of the Mateo Santillán Charitable Trust, the foundation had opened six free pediatric clinics across Mexico City, ensuring that no low-income mother would ever suffer the fear and exploitation Mariana had faced four years ago.

Ernesto had been sentenced to thirty-five years in maximum-security prison without possibility of parole, his assets seized and redirected into the charitable foundation.

And most importantly, the emptiness that had once haunted the halls of the mansion was gone, replaced forever by love, trust, and the unshakeable bond of a real family.

"Mommy! Uncle Ale! Come look!" Lucía called out from her easel, waving her little paint-covered hands excitedly.

Alejandro and Mariana walked hand-in-hand over to the oak tree, looking down at the canvas Lucía had just completed.

On the paper was a crude, beautiful painting of three figures standing together under a massive yellow sun.

In the middle was a little girl holding a rabbit. On her left was a woman with a bright pink dress. And on her right was a tall man with a blue butterfly painted on his forehead.

"It's us," Lucía announced proudly, pointing her paintbrush at the canvas. "This is our big house family."

Alejandro looked down at the painting, then at Mariana, his eyes shining with tears of absolute gratitude. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, and opened it to reveal a shimmering diamond ring shaped like a delicate butterfly.

He knelt down on one knee on the green grass before Mariana.

"Mariana Ríos," Alejandro said, his voice trembling with emotion. "You brought color into my dark world. You showed me that love is the only thing worth protecting. Will you make this house our forever home, and marry me?"

Mariana covered her mouth with her hand, tears of pure joy spilling over her eyelashes as she looked at the man who had fought the world to protect her and her child.

"Yes, Alejandro," Mariana sobbed happily, stepping forward as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Lucía cheered, throwing her paintbrushes into the air and jumping into their arms, hugging them both tightly around their necks.

May you like

"Yay!" Lucía giggled. "Yellow fixed the sad house!"

Alejandro pulled both of them close against his heart, kissing Mariana deeply beneath the shade of the oak tree, while the afternoon sun bathed the mansion in golden light—a home no longer defined by secrets or shadows, but by the eternal colors of love, truth, and hope.
