Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 6: THE CABIN IN THE PINE FOREST

By 2:00 a.m., the heavy city rain had transitioned into a soft, fragrant mist clinging to the massive pine trees of the Ajusco mountain range.
The Audi navigated up a steep, unpaved gravel track, finally coming to a stop in front of a stunning, modern timber-and-glass cabin tucked deep within a dense forest clearing. The structure was completely off-grid, powered by solar arrays and geothermal heat, invisible from the main highway below.
Alejandro killed the engine and stepped out into the cool mountain air, opening the rear door for Mariana.
Lucía had fallen fast asleep in Mariana’s arms, her breath rhythmic and sweet, clutching her little rabbit.
"Let me take her," Alejandro offered gently, reaching out his arms.
Mariana hesitated for a fraction of a second, then allowed Alejandro to lift the sleeping child into his arms. He carried her with an extraordinary, careful tenderness, as if holding a delicate piece of glass, supporting her head against his broad shoulder.
They walked inside the cabin. The interior was warm, smelling of cedarwood and dried herbs. A large stone fireplace dominated the main living room, surrounded by comfortable leather furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows showing the dark silhouette of the forest.
Alejandro carried Lucía upstairs to a cozy bedroom fitted with a plush king-sized bed, laying her down softly beneath a thick down duvet. He pulled off her little red boots, setting them neatly beside the bed, and tucked Panquecito beneath her arm.
He stood by the bedside for a long moment, watching her breathe, his face illuminated by the moonlight filtering through the window.
"She looks so much like him," Alejandro murmured softly, his voice thick with emotion.
Mariana walked up beside him, leaning against the doorframe. "Mateo?"
"Yes," Alejandro whispered. "Mateo was always the gentle one. He hated conflict. He used to spend hours in the garden painting watercolors when we were kids, while my father forced me to memorize stock portfolios and corporate restructuring plans. I spent my whole life trying to protect him from the world... and in the end, I failed."
"You didn't fail him, Alejandro," Mariana said softly, stepping closer to him. "You're protecting his daughter right now. You gave her a chance to live. Mateo would be so proud of you."
Alejandro turned to look at Mariana. In the dim moonlight, standing in the quiet room, the distance between the wealthy employer and the humble maid dissolved completely. They were simply two human beings bound together by love for a child and a shared struggle against a dark past.
"I spent four years believing my heart died in that car crash with Mateo," Alejandro admitted, his voice barely audible. "I built walls around myself. I made my house a fortress because I thought if I let anyone close, they would just betray me or die."
He looked into Mariana’s warm brown eyes, his hand moving almost automatically to gently brush a strand of dark hair away from her face.
"And then you walked into my house," Alejandro continued, "and this little girl painted a yellow sun on my face... and for the first time in four years, I felt alive again."

Mariana felt a strange, warm flutter in her chest. She reached up, placing her hand gently over Alejandro’s large hand resting against her cheek.
"We aren't going anywhere, Alejandro," Mariana promised softly. "We're going to win this fight together."
