Chapter 4 - The Golden Invitation

Word of major land acquisitions in North Scottsdale travels fast among the high-society real estate circles of Paradise Valley. However, the identity of the mysterious seller behind the multi-million dollar "Elena Dawson Trust" remained fiercely guarded by Vance, Sterling & Associates.

In his sprawling Paradise Valley mansion, Christopher Dawson was having a terrible week.

His commercial real estate development firm, Dawson Capital, was facing a severe liquidity crisis. A major multi-use luxury complex project he had backed had stalled due to a sudden spike in material costs, and his primary financial backers were threatening to pull their funding unless he secured new capital by the end of the month.

Christopher sat in his spacious home office, nursing a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. Jacqueline walked in, wearing a silk robe, holding her iPad.

"Christopher, did you hear?" Jacqueline asked, her eyes gleaming with gossip. "The city council just approved the rezoning of that massive desert parcel north of the country club. Someone sold the mineral rights for over fifty million dollars!"

"I heard," Christopher muttered bitterly, swirling his whiskey. "Some lucky old local family held onto worthless dirt for forty years and hit the jackpot. If I had ten million in liquidity right now, I could buy into the infrastructure contract for that development and save our firm."

"Well, speaking of money," Jacqueline said, lowering her voice slightly, "have you heard anything from your mother?"

Christopher frowned, feeling a brief, uncomfortable prick of guilt that he quickly suppressed. "No. I sent a check for five hundred dollars to Patrick’s address two days ago. That should keep her fed in some budget motel until she figures out her social security benefits."

"Good," Jacqueline sighed with relief. "Because the Annual Paradise Valley Business Gala is this Saturday. Mayor Higgins will be there, along with the executives from the new lithium consortium. We cannot afford any family drama or embarrassing rumors."

Just then, Christopher’s private phone rang. The caller ID displayed the name of Harrison Vance—the most powerful corporate attorney in Phoenix, a man whose calls Christopher had been trying to schedule for six months.

Christopher practically leapt out of his chair, adjusting his voice to project smooth, executive confidence.

"Mr. Vance! What an absolute honor to hear from you sir."

"Mr. Dawson," Vance’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, formal, and icy cold. "I am calling on behalf of my client, the primary trustee of the Elena Dawson Trust. My client is hosting a private celebratory dinner and corporate unveiling this Friday evening at the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Palms Resort."

Christopher’s heart skipped a beat. "The Elena Dawson Trust? Your client invited me?"

"You and your wife, Jacqueline, as well as your sister, Dr. Victoria Dawson," Vance replied smoothly. "My client explicitly requested your presence. Personal invitations have been delivered to your residences via courier. We expect you to attend."

"We would be delighted! Absolutely honored!" Christopher gushed, his eyes widening with unbridled greed. "Please convey my deepest regards to your client!"

"Oh, you will be able to convey them yourself, Mr. Dawson," Vance said with a dry, mysterious tone before hanging up.

Christopher slammed the phone down and let out a triumphant shout. "Jacqueline! Get your best dress ready! Harrison Vance’s top client just personally invited us to an exclusive dinner at the Royal Palms!"

Jacqueline clapped her hands in delight. "Oh, Christopher! This is it! This is the investor who can save your firm!"

Thirty minutes away, in her high-end medical clinic, Dr. Victoria Dawson was looking at her own silver-embossed invitation card that had just been delivered by a uniformed courier.

Her husband, Richard—an accountant whose firm was currently being audited for tax irregularities—stared over her shoulder.

"The Elena Dawson Trust?" Richard asked, his eyes sharp with interest. "Victoria, isn't 'Dawson' the same last name as your family?"

Victoria laughed dismissively, tossing the invitation onto her mahogany desk. "It’s a common name. Probably some distant branch of oil executives from Texas. But if Harrison Vance is representing them, they have serious political weight. If I can secure their executive health contract for my private clinic, it could double our annual revenue."

"Are you going?" Richard asked.

"Of course I'm going," Victoria said, checking her reflection in the mirror and adjusting her designer jacket. "I’ll wear the Cartier necklace. In this city, power respects power."

Neither Christopher nor Victoria noticed the subtle detail printed at the very bottom of the elegant gold-leaf invitation cards:

“Host: The Executive Trustee of the Elena Dawson Foundation. Guest of Honor: Mrs. Margaret Dawson.”
