Chapter 5 - The Grand Ballroom

The Royal Palms Resort was a sprawling estate of Spanish colonial architecture, glittering fountains, and towering palm trees lit by golden accent lights. Outside the grand ballroom, a line of luxury sedans, Ferraris, and Bentleys dropped off Paradise Valley’s financial elite.

Christopher stepped out of his Mercedes-Benz wearing an Italian tuxedo, holding Jacqueline’s arm. Jacqueline wore a emerald green evening dress, her diamond earrings sparkling under the entrance chandeliers.

"Remember, Christopher," Jacqueline whispered urgently, checking her makeup in her compact mirror. "Find out who the trustee is immediately. Offer them a twenty percent equity stake in your development firm if they provide the bridge loan."

"I know how to close a deal, Jacqueline," Christopher said, adjusting his bowtie.

As they walked through the grand foyer, they ran into Victoria and Richard. Victoria wore a white satin gown paired with a diamond collar, looking like a high-society matriarch.

"Victoria!" Christopher greeted his sister, offering a brief, transactional hug. "Did you get the invitation too?"

"Of course," Victoria said, smoothing her gown. "Harrison Vance’s office personally delivered it. Have you seen who the host is yet?"

"Not yet," Christopher admitted, scanning the lavish room. "The doors to the private dining hall are still guarded by security."

The ballroom was magnificent. Long tables covered in white linen were adorned with fresh white orchids, crystal glassware, and sterling silver cutlery. At the far end of the room stood a raised stage featuring a massive digital screen covered by a velvet curtain.

Three hundred of Phoenix's most prominent figures—city council members, bank presidents, real estate tycoons, and corporate lawyers—mangled together, sipping vintage champagne.

At precisely eight o'clock, the heavy mahogany double doors at the front of the stage opened.

Harrison Vance stepped up to the podium on stage, tapping his crystal glass with a silver spoon. The room gradually quieted down, every guest turning their attention to the stage.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Vance’s voice echoed clearly through the state-of-the-art sound system. "On behalf of Vance, Sterling & Associates, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the official public unveiling of the Elena Dawson Trust."

Christopher leaned into Jacqueline, whispering excitedly. "Here it comes. Watch who walks out."

"Tonight," Vance continued, "we celebrate not only a fifty-six million dollar land transaction that will shape the industrial future of Arizona, but also the enduring legacy of family, resilience, and honor."

Vance turned toward the side entrance of the stage.

"Please welcome the primary founder and sole proprietor of the trust: Mrs. Margaret Dawson."

The velvet curtains parted.

Walking slowly onto the stage, wearing a custom-tailored dark navy silk gown adorned with a single strand of flawless South Sea pearls, was Margaret Dawson. She walked with quiet, regal grace, leaning lightly on a dark mahogany cane topped with a polished gold handle.

Beside her, holding her arm with immense pride and care, was Patrick. He wore a perfectly fitted charcoal tuxedo, his hair neatly styled, his demeanor calm, steady, and unshakeable. On his hand, his simple gold wedding ring caught the golden light of the chandeliers. On her other side walked Samantha, looking breathtaking in an elegant sapphire dress.

The ballroom erupted into polite applause.

In the front row, Christopher’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers. It hit the marble floor with a sharp, echoing shatter, sparkling wine splashing over his Italian leather shoes.

Victoria’s jaw dropped so wide her diamond collar seemed to choke her. She gripped her husband's arm so tightly her acrylic nails cut through his jacket sleeve.

"Mom...?" Christopher choked out, his face turning as pale as a bedsheet. "No... no, that's impossible... That's a mistake!"

"Is that... is that your mother?" Jacqueline gasped, her voice trembling in sheer horror as she stared at the woman she had locked out of her mansion three days ago. "Christopher... what is happening?!"
